The great war of the gods will come upon the earth; the fires and terror of their rule will return for a time, but the children of the gods may be thus prepared, themselves aware and powerful...they may stand along side the gods not as equals, but as allies, feared and ready.
The great cycle, the beginning and the end, turns just as the plans of the gods turn once again to the world of men.
And they will come upon the earth only after the skies rain down fire and the very earth itself is made to shake and the great cities of men fall into ruins. Their plans are set and their purpose is clear; they come for war.

I'm a sucker for ARGs. This one is associated with J J Abrams' in-production film -- the teaser trailer to which is being shown ahead of the Transformers movie, apparently -- which has the working title "Cloverfield"
(
http://www.trailerspy.com/2007/07/05/transformers-comes-with-a-mystery-trailer/) Here's the trailer, for those of us who haven't seen Transformers yet.
So far the Ethan Haas Was Right site consists of some puzzles which reveal vaguely informative cutscene footage and then culminate with a password to be used on August 1st. Or so it seems.
A second site I have found ((
http://www.serpo.org/index.asp) here) may have something to do with the overall ARG as well. I'm not very sure about this, but it does reference clover fields etc, and I found it link-hopping through various discussions of the movie trailer -- I just forget how or where I stumbled upon it.
The official movie site is (
http://www.1-18-08.com/) here and the IMDb page for the movie is (
http://imdb.com/title/tt1060277/) here.
Also there's (
http://ethanhaaswaswrong.blogspot.com/) which I'm assuming isn't a fakesite (there are a couple of fakesites already, which is hideously gay and I wish people wouldn't do that)
The ARG seems to be in its infancy, so I think we can expect more updates and tantalising non-info for a bit. The next major event would seem to be slated for August 1st, though.
Like I say, I'm completely infatuated with the ARG concept (especially in terms of viral marketing) so this is making me happy. I hope it is making you happy too.
BE HAPPY. IT IS THE ONLY WAY WE'RE GOING TO GET THROUGH THIS ALIVE.
srsly
(ps for some reason I think the MONSTER ATTACKS NEW YORK IS IT GODZILLA OR CTHULHU OH GOD PLEASE LET IT BE CTHULHU neckbeards are off-track and probably misdirecting everything. While it's apparent from the trailer that
something big and firebally is ripping up chunks of the Big Apple, I think the straight-up "monster movie" angle is a little too weak -- unless it has other, more Abrams-y, overtones... We know the rumours that Abrams' new project
is a monster movie, but I still think that term is used by him to denote something a bit more broad than a King Kong or Godzilla or Independence Day flick)

Just this minute receive'd in ye E-Maile Boxxe:
(spoilers to hide clues on how to approach the five puzzles)

If you're receiving this auto-response message it means that I've gone into hiding. You should be careful now, too. They're likely to start coming after all of us in an attempt to keep the balance of power in their favor. But remember, as our numbers increase as a group, the weaker they'll become.
As you recruit new people to our cause, you might need to share this message as guidance for how to navigate the 5 locks to the key code...
1) The first lock will test your memory. Follow the trail of light and sound, but be careful -- one wrong move will send you back to the beginning.
2) For the second lock, you may need to look to the stars. They will help you find HAAS who will lead your way.
3) The third lock will require you to extinguish all lights but one. Only with one light remaining will you be able to proceed.
4) The fourth lock will let you move all 4 pieces through the control of one. However, unless the three key pieces are simultaneously placed into position, you will not be granted access.
5) The fifth lock will be the toughest. Seek help again from the stars to reveal your key and the message that you must decode. The two working together will open the way. Good luck.

"Van Mantra" is mentioned on the Ethan Haas Was Wrong blog:
Quote:
It has come to our attention that the blasphemy of Van Mantra is spreading across the globe.
His prophet Ethan Haas was nothing more than a raving lunatic long forgotten by history.
Mantra's website EthanHaasWasRight is a foolish attempt to capture the short attention of today's youth in an attempt to breath new life into the visions of a long dead fool.
We will do our best to counter this filth and steer humanity back to it's proper course.
So there are at least two "sides" in this fiction. Constant references to stars and gods and wars. And there's apparently a brief red and white circle that appears in one of the EthanHaasWasRight movies that, when clicked, takes you to a different site with more intrigue... But I haven't seen nor clicked on that alleged red and white circle at this point.

Yeah, I started following this one since Eldritch Errors seems to have ground to a halt again (seriously, one of the characters commits suicide, and nothing happens as a result?).
Looking forward to the supposed kick-off on Aug 1.
Gingerbread Man on 7/7/2007 at 21:58
I just discovered Eldritch Errors and I'm having a hard time getting into it. How should I begin?
It's tough when you're not in at the ground floor with these things. You're not really meant to be far behind like that, but I still like figuring out the puzzles and links for myself.

Just go to (
http://www.sentryoutpost.com/) Sentry Outpost, sign up for the forum, and read through the wiki.
Other in-game sites include (
http://www.bseeingu.com/), and (
http://68.209.174.80/) (which, like Sentry Outpost, has weirdness on various ports that are explained in the wiki)
But really, out of the month I've been playing it, there's been maybe four days of actual gameplay. It's really badly paced for something being made by experienced ARG designers (who were involved with Art of the Heist and Who is Benjamin Stove).

After the trailer and the cold realisation that this is by Abrams of Lost fame, I'll just hope it's not a series of movies. ;)

Abrams, on every project he's ever done: "I'm holding a small box in my hand. The Box is not special, but INSIDE the Box there is something special. And it's really really cool. And I'm NOT going to tell you what it is! You can guess what it is, but you won't be anywhere close, because you aren't as cool or Smart as me."
Audience: Goddammit Abrams, what do you have in the Box!
Abrams: Come back in 2 months, and I'll give you a clue.
Audience: It's been 2 months, what's the clue!?
Abrams: The color of the thing inside the Box: it's sort of like a shade of Blue, but I wouldn't exactly call it "Blue." the plot thickens, doesn't it? Come back in three more months, I'll give you another clue.
Audience: WHAT THE HELL is that box!?!?
Abrams: Here's your next clue: The thing inside the box makes a sound. Sort of.
Audience: MOTHERFUCKER!!!!
Abrams: In one more month, I'll open the Box.
Audience: You'd better open that box, asshole!
Abrams: and so I will. (He opens Box.)
Audience: Now give it too me so I can see inside!
Abrams: Sure... in two weeks.
Audience: please... Please... show me what's inside the box.
Abrams: Okay. Prepare to be blown away by my cleverness! (hands over box.)
Audience: Wait. What the-? There's nothing in this box! You said there was something inside this box that was sort-of blue and sort-of made a noise!
Abrams: Ah, but isn't there? The inside of the box is a shade of blue. and if you tap the inside of the box, you hear a noise. See how cool and clever I am?
Audience: Dude, go fuck yourself.
Abrams: Okay. So I guess that means you don't want to know what cool thing is in my briefcase and how it relates to something from your childhood?
Audience:..............Dammit.
If this does turn out to be a Cthulhu movie then this will be the greatest thing ever to happen in Movie history. I'm a huge Lovecraft fan; and aside from the silent movie made in the 90's this is an as-yet-grossly-untapped area of storytelling much needed to be tapped.

That reason is because the trailer is super-clichéd... the head of the Statue of Liberty rolling by? The whole feel is monster movie, no doubt. That does not mean it is bad - just means it is monster movie :)
(and yes, i'm one of the "let it be Cthulhu" crowd even though i know it is not)
godismygoldfish on 9/7/2007 at 06:10
God please let this be a Cthulu/Lovecraft film done right. I've been waiting so long for one to appear that I'de decided I might as well write the fucker myself.
