My drive's a little different from that one, but honestly even if I could get it apart, I'm not sure what to do with it at that point? Are you saying that the USB connection could be the problem? Once out of the case, do I just install in my box like another hard drive or something?
Yes. Pretend it is a new HDD and install it in a spare bay.
Try a new USB cord first though. Most Sata drives have the same connectors. It may have an adaptor on it for the original case. If so you will need to remove that. But the basic connections should be the same as any SATA HDD you have in your system.
Assuming you are using a system that has SATA drives.
Try (
www.belarc.com) and DL the ADVISOR. Run that app (it's small) and it should tell you every drive, Vcard, CPU etc. and application in your system. Including the authorization codes for the operating system.

Try (
http://gsmartcontrol.berlios.de/home/index.php/en/Home) GSmartControl. It's geeky, but it will let you see the drive's own error log, and you can have the drive do a built-in self test.
It GSmartControl can't see the drive then you may need to enable S.M.A.R.T. in the BIOS, or maybe the usb controller is damaged, as Al_B suggested. Definitely move the drive to a desktop computer if you can.
If your data is important, look into rescue CDs. Even if a virus overwrote your partition table, there are tools out there that can reconstruct it.
