I bought Deus Ex: Invisible Wars... 3 days ago, for €10,00.
I had set out to get Battlefield 2, didn't find it, saw this one instead, and was reminded of you lot.
The reason: I came here for SS2, and found out that Deus Ex was about as good.
I did not (of course) know that Invisible Wars is the sequel.
Either way, a few hours later I find myself playing the game.
Granted, the graphics were choppy, but that didn't bother me much after I found out there's hitlocations nonetheless (something I feared would be lost along with graphics). So no bad feelings there.
I love the abilities of playing-style the biomods give you. I tried stealth, and it works.
Something that caught my eye: barrels of waste actually start spraying poison where you hit them if shot. that was new.
The force of the weapons would be at least the equivalent of a 220mm shell if you look at the dead bodies fly, but even that is kinda cool if you ask me.
BUT, the primary reason I say "Envy me!" is...
I have never played Deus Ex 1 yet... so I can enjoy this game all I like :p
Envy me :p
Oh crap, lunchbreak's over... *is at work*
Cya ^_^

Envy you? Far from it. Play DX1. You won't regret it. DX2 is entertaining, but it felt very contrived. Everything felt forced, and every technology in DX2 was explained away by "nano"-this and "nano"-that. If you're familiar with literary devices in fiction, you'll know that "suspension of disbelief" is a key element of successful storytelling. In other words, things may be fantastic, but not "too" fantastic beyond the limits of the world created by the author. DX2 does a pitiful job establishing credibility with its scientific explanations. Hell, the writers for the X-Files television series had an army of scientific consultants from many universities, to keep their technologies just on the edge of believability.

I think you miss HBlast's point, moop.

Yup... I tell you to envy me, because I haven't played DX 1 (yet)... meaning I still get to enjoy 2 :p

How is that missing the point? I'm just saying that DX2 won't be "less spoiled" because you haven't played DX1... it's still enjoyable, in the relatively shallow way it is. I don't think playing DX1 first taints the experience of DX2 by making the player aware of just how far DX2 fell from favor of DX1's fan base. DX2 is a "moderate" gaming experience regardless of whether you've played DX1. For some. Anyway, maybe I'm still missing the point, maybe not. I just just think you should be envying others who have enjoyed DX1. :D
Have fun though, and do get DX1 after you're done DX2. :)

My computer can't play IW, but I had heard they got rid of location specific damage. Maybe they just implemented them really badly.
Ziemanskye on 3/10/2005 at 21:47
I don't think there's locational damage on incoming fire - you can't get your arms or legs blown off anymore, but you can shoot the enemy in the head to kill them quicker, and I think (it's been a while) you can shoot their hands/weapons to make them drop them sometimes too.

There is indeed no dismemberment (dunno if there ever was, it came as v1.2 off the cd), after 12 or 13 concussion blasts on 1 poor guard I can safely confirm that I think :p
(did get him to run his hand through the ceiling, meaning he was hanging there really awkwardly, cool physics :p)
Headshots indeed kill faster and I also got a few accidental weapon drops so far, but aiming for the weapons for said effect is a literal and proverbial longshot.
Also it seems that NPC's respond with reasonable logic in the direction they rebound if hit while dead or being killed.
But 9mm still feels like 90mm if you see them fly :p
*juggles bad guy*
Either way, I restarted halfway last night... I was doing *EVERYTHING*, didn't feel very good for an RPG...
Currently going for the no-kill way... if I can help it.
What I first did in about 1 and a half hour or something I did in... 8 minutes and 16 seconds. (reach biomod-lab)
I still think it's mean they put Cloak and Neural Processor (wasn't it called that?) in the same slot... I want both :nono: *whine* :p

So... we're supposed to envy you for enjoying a big plate full of Spam, because you've never had steak?
Riiiight.
HBlast on 6/10/2005 at 08:02
Yup...
Cuz Spam is a lot cheaper than steak, and if you've never had steak and still enjoy spam, you don't know what you're missing.
And if you don't know what you're missing, the inferior good is just as good as the luxury... no?
My point: when I'm done with IW, I'll have liked the game and I can still play DX1 and like that even better.
If I'd have played DX1 first I'd have enjoyed that, and thought this game was a piece of crap... so in effect, I get to enjoy both games, simply because I played the worst one first.
