The best hint I can give you is... Wait. For a day.
The next best hint is:
When infront of the door, sleep an hour. Wake up, look at the door, then sleep for another hour. Keep doing this.
Curiously enough, you don't actually need to do any of the prior quests to get inside. That's right - if you want to skip half of the main quest, you can, and without any sideaffects.

*makes a face* Either my game is bad, or a patch fixed it. I went to the cavern but it wouldn't open for me, even at the proper time. Hmm.

I found that too when I did it ages ago, but I was a vampire at the time without 5+ restore health constant effect so it could have been I hadn't waited long enough before I gave up.

I am going strictly on memory here but...
On the coastline "Azura's Coast" there is a shrine with a huge statue
of Azura near the entrance. It's right at the edge of the water somewhere
on Azura's Coast. Anyway, go in there and "use" the statue in the shrine.
Azura will give you a quest. Do that quest and return to the shrine. Azura will
give you a ring (I think "Azura's Star"). Take that ring to the BIG DOOR somewhere northwestward-ish of the Zainab camp and a little way into the Ashlands. At dusk or dawn the door will open. Go in...
Again, this is all from memory of about a year ago. If you still need help,
reply again and I will re-install the game and give x,y,z coords and more detailed directions. GL

Sorry mate. You don't need Azura's Star to get inside (atleast, it was never mentioned on the sites and in Morrowind Prophecies.) I thought so too, hearing what Azura said when I tried to enter.
Azura's Star isn't a ringer, either, it's a reusable soul gem. VEry handy :thumb:
Ah, I see. Well, like I said I was going on old memory. Anyway, the main point about dawn or dusk entry would have been helpful to know at least. Thanks for the corrections.

Yeah. Azura is the Daedric Prince of Dusk and Dawn, and that's when Azura's star appears in the sky. Not to be confused with Azura's star the artifact.
It's like around 6am and/or 6pm.

Ringer. Heh. Someone's been watching too many movie previews.
