I have just installed SS2 again (after a long while) with new mods, patches, etc. Everything looks fine. Just one thing: I always had trouble with understanding the English audiologs. Is there any way to change the ouput to German?

Yes, if you find German voice actors and give them scripts and recording equipment.
Translating the text to German would be an easier task as you may have figured out already. ;)

It would be easier to buy the German version of SS2 ;)
@ Hal - you can't change the language, in the English version are only the English textes/voices. You would need the German version of SS2.

Aah, Ok. In any case, thanks. I have something in mind that the CDROM version of System Shock 1 was multilingual, right? Anyhow, then I have to see where to get the German version.

Yes, the CDRom version of System Shock 1 was multilingual: English, German and French.

Learning spoken English won't help, I can speak and understand very well.
But I noticed something very astonishing. Just for trial purpose I changed the language setting in the install.cfg file from "language english" to "language german". All of a sudden item descriptions, emails, notes, and some parts of the game menu (difficulty settings and others) were in German, although I definitely have the English version. All fine and well so far. The only problem is that there is no English voice output. Will keep on trying...

Is there a way to change folder names in an archive without unzipping/zipping it? I would like to change the folders "english" to "german" in snd2.crf. Maybe it works so that I have english voice output with german text when language setting is german.

I have found a solution already. Now I have English voice output and German texts/item descriptions.
Just in case somebody is interested in that, here is how it works:
1) Make a backup of snd2.crf.
2) Rename snd2.crf to snd2.zip.
3) Extract all folders from snd2.zip with WINRAR.
4) Each folder does have a subfolder "english". Change it to "german".
5) Open snd2.zip with WINRAR and delete the folders therein, but leave at least one.
6) Add the formerly extracted folders (now with subfolder "german") to the snd2.zip archive.
7) Open snd2.zip with WINRAR and delete the remaining old folder (then one that is left from 5)).
8) Rename snd2.zip to snd2.crf.
9) Change the language setting in install.cfg: "language german" instead of "language english".
NOTE: This is not working by unzipping snd2.zip, changing the folder names and creating a new snd2.zip archive to be renamed to snd2.crf.

You could just open up snd2.crf with 7-Zip and rename the folders in the archive directly. :erm:
