Optional level is rare? It's tacked on. The zone control room at least felt like a proper end to the game.
In fact the whole "outside of NPP" feels tacked on too.

Granted, gameplaywise its just pif paf kill stuff but its a pretty spectacular level imho.

If you mean the room you get in after the bonus level, in the movie, then yes.

There was no room I go into after, I never went into it. Cinematic =/= gameplay.
Monolith control is before the hologram and before all of those unexceptional portals. There was actually anticipation for what's coming and, voila, monolith control. There was anticipation for what's coming after the portal too, and then nothing.

Almost all games end with cinematic, so I guess all of them don't end properly from such POV because cinematic virtually always does a part of action for you.

Monolith control is the room with the hologram. When you destroy those 6 tubes, the Monolith (more precisely its illusion) disappears.

Cinematic wraps things up, they are not suppose to do what you ought to do.
Whatever. I didn't like the ending. If they'd show the c-consciousness structure in the game itself would have solved the problem, just walking up to it would've been 100 times better. There was no pacing to the series of portals. That goes for the outside of NPP too, felt like I was playing doom.

Guys you know those tubes streloks shoots at the end cinematic?
I think you see those tubes in x16... That room thats next to the one where you feint...
There's four tube thingies there with wires and stuff.
Anyone remember?
And that ending level came as such a big suprise I just thought if you choose it shows a cinematic, but no you continue playing!

That's tubes with c-consciousness members.

I remember some cage-like things in X18 with embryos or something like that, but that's not it, they're just containers for experiment participants.

I know what you mean. Yeah I know they're for those c-c guys.
But in x16 really i think those tubes look alot like the ending ones except they dont have humans inside... only a speculation.
Here's something wierd that happened yesterday to me, I started a new game after copying alive mod. aLiVe... Well I went to save nimble and after killing all the bandits I look on my map to see where nimble is coz he wasnt at his ussual hostage place. Guess where I found him?
At the end of cordon to the north fighting some dogs and well later on I found his body there...

Mebbe he isnt so far off. The X-18 tubes were prolly an experimental stage for c-conciousness. So they put stuff in there and tried to "link" it to make some small version of it and accidentally created the Poltergeists in the process (Those embryo things bear some resemblance to em, no legs and all. Plus the whole place is stuffed with the drat things :p ).
PS : Alive has some issues, try AMK instead ;)
