This isn't constructive discussion as such, it's more of an angry rant. Meh.
Okay, so Enchanting sucks huge volumes of cock. Seriously, I hate it.
I've been messing aournd with the prospect of enchanting myself a nice robe for (
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=70270) some time now. And i've tried
everything to make a decent enchanted robe without resorting to "cheating" (i.e. making it in the CS). I thought maybe it was because my personal enchanting skill wasn't enough - nope; a quick "player->setenchanting 100" command dispelled that theory. I've come to realise that's it's just because the whole system of enchantment is a load of shite. The entire thing. Shite.
Reasons:* the best robe has an enchantment rating of 40, which is stupidly low (I can't even get a "Constant Restore Health 2 Points" to fit) ...
* ... whereas rings have enchantment ratings of 100+ -> so very, very wrong
* it's ridiculously expensive
* the enchanted items you find in the game clearly defy the enchantment "rules"
you have to abide bySo yeah, I hate it. Ah well, back to the Construction Set... :erg:

I, too, found it a little strange that Exquisite robes can hold so little enchantment, but Exquisite rings and amulets can hold so much. But in thinking about it further - if clothes and armor has a higher enchantment rating than rings, you'd be invincible in every conceivable way in no time. By limiting the super-enchantments to rings and amulets, the designers gave the player a LITTLE hinderence (i.e. you can only wear 1 amulet and 2 rings at a time).
With the relatively low enchantment of clothes, the best thing I've found to use them for are low-level constant effect spells like night-eye, water breathing, etc. Or, make them another piece in a Fortify Skill suite - use whatever few points you can get out of each item of clothing to raise the culumaltive effect (Fortify Strength, Fortify Magicka, etc.). You should (IIRC) be able to get 4 or 5 points of Fortify out of an Exquisite robe.

I've tended to use clothing for constant effect stuff like bound weapons as they are low cost enough to fit a few on one article of clothing and constant bound weapons are so useful. And you can find items that would be impossible to replicate yourself without cheating but these are usually unique items that wouldn't be so unique if you had already made a dozen of them by the time you found it.

jewelry is always more magical than clothing, look at any game... plus enchanted stuff you find probably is supposed to have some kind of lore or something behind it, so of course its stronger than whatever you can make. Look at any other game, the most powerful items are some kind of lore item(armor/weapon) or a peice of jewelry, some ancient ring, necklace, brooch, tiara, XD.
Restore health is kind of overpowered, I don't see why you should be able to have a robe which gives you constant enchant of 2 health.
With max(non cheating) stats, your not supposed to be able to succeed all the time... enchanting was meant to be hard... if you want to succeed all the time, set your enchant skill to 25,000 or something...

You can enchant anything with intelligence > 2000, even if you have an enchant skill of 25.

If the complaint is "my enchantments keep failing" rather than "why is the enchantment power of {X item} so low," just take it to any enchanter (Mages Guilds, Temples, free-standing Enchantment shops), and they'll do it for you. Granted, it'll cost, but with money so ridiculously easy to come by in the game, you should easily be able to afford any price they name (assuming you didn't just get off the boat from Sedya Neen).

Zaphod - you make lots of sense. I dig what you mean about balancing - I suppose it would be a bit too easy otherwise. Thanks. :)
But regarding rings etc. - bollocks. I still say that a robe should have more potential for enchantment than it currently does. It's like a bloody Common Ring has got more enchantment points that an Ebony Shortsword - stupid. :nono:
But as you say, i've had no trouble getting enchantment to work - plenty of money to buy service off of the professionals.
Cheers all around,

The enchanting system is pretty screwed up. But it doese have a lot of good points. Like the fatc that u can enchant any spell you have. Most other RPGs dont make that availible. But by the way i also found it iritating that the robes have low enchantment vlaue. I also dont like the way excquisite robs make you look. So i just use a robe i got off the morag tong. It looks the same as the one eno hlaalu uses.
I dont enchant it at all. But all my other stuff is enchanted. i am level 68 and kick some seriose ass. And despite the little problem of not being able to enchant the robes with too good of enchants, you can enchant a deadric tower shield with like 225, so i am not complaining. I would get the rest of the deadric stuff to enchant but as seeing that Divith Fyr is like the only one to have half the deadric stuff. I like Divith Fyr, he has yorginborgin in his basement. I didnt want to kill him:cheeky:

I have just started morrowind, having played b4 but without my dad warning me when he was going to format the hard drive. I currently have about 3000 gold in my pocket, and i am making a whole lot of money by selling off the armour of the guys in the sewers of mournhold (tribunal) i was just going to ask, what sort of level do you need to be in tribunal to play through it, and whether it was worth going to "odd job" for various guilds before going for the main quest.

I finished Tribunal at level 15. The Odd Jobs are worth it cause they're fun
