I just like to assume it's in case it goes off in your pocket.
Shut up, this makes perfect sense!!

Doesn't "dynamically 'forged' on command" imply that you can turn it on and off?
Probably, but I interpret it as "the blade can change it's internal molecular organization in order to cut more easily through material", not as "some metal will magically appear". I have no idea what the writers really meant (I don't know if they even knew what they meant) but one possible explanation I could imagine is the molecule of the blade begin to vibrate extremely rapidly, let's say at a frequency of 100Mhz, which would make it like super chainsaw. I can understand the blade emitting light as a side effect when the "power" is applied, but I find the idea it can create a new blade on command completely ludicrous.

Ludicrous, perhaps, but it is what they animated. :p

Wow, I hope you never read the descriptions of how the augmentations work!
PS. you're being silly

Hello, welcome to video game technology.

I suspect they meant IT'S A FUCKING LIGHTSABER BUT OBVIOUSLY WE CAN'T CALL IT THAT SINCE THIS ISN'T A LUCASARTS PRODUCT AND ALSO SOMETHING ABOUT NANITES or something.

small but moderately powerfull weapon will not rape any game balance
i hate to refer to it again but look at star wars jedi knight for proof
even with the Tooth you can suck at the game... on the other hand you can complete the game with only a baton and a pistol if you know how to play (maybe some lams just for fun additionaly)
also.. has anyone seen "Blame!" manga?=) you think if Killy had an inventory, his small gun must have taken all of his inventory slots just because it can do 70 km holes in metal?=)
and yes - animation shows it goes off when put away... so the fix would have been useful.

I like D'Juhn's idea: it's not technically taking all that space, but if it turned on accidentally, it'd be embarassing if it impaled all your grenades or something. So it's a safety window.
Also, comparing DX to jedi knight is possibly the silliest thing I've heard today.

I know, but I though it was agreed that it was the animation which was wrong, not the description. Didn't we have this debate a few years ago?

A lot of things are ludicrous with Deus Ex from a realism point of view (even the story), but that's not what I meant. What I find ludicrous is to interpret it as a lightsaber while the description pretty much tries to say it's not.

The structure of the blade was maintained by a coating of nanoscale whetting devices. Very sharp.
Does this really sound like forming a entirely new blade from nothing when the power is applied?

turned on accidently ahahah yea thats funny. also appicable to the granades themselves. if LAM is turned on accidently... youre screwed. but LAM takes only one slot (even 10 lams)
also. I am not comparing DX and Jedi Knight. i just give example of small but powerfull weapon in another game which does not screw game balance...
(do I really need to explain that lol?)
