My criticisms have always been fair...nothing has changed. The statement "That's why the implementation is the critical difference here."...is in reference to those features which appear to be beneficial at first glance, when in reality it is the implementation that will ultimately decide their value...This is separate from the clearly unwelcome elements that will diminish the THIEF experience.

Gah, I should have anticipated that response. Well, if you're dead set against certain elements existing even if they turn out to be well motivated and well implemented, I guess there's nothing I can say to change your mind.

How do headshots and <s>kill cams</s> takedown cinematics fit in a Thief game exactly?
From where I'm standing, Thief has devolved into "Press X to takedown", and "Headshot! 40 XP!".

I wouldn't bother Chade. People have to see for themselves, and even then it may not convince them to think positively about this game. Now now, naysayers, don't get me wrong, there are things I hated about what I've seen of this game too! That being said, today's demo was rather good. I was happy to not see icons above guards' heads for one thing.
I still feel that the shroud thing around the edges of the screen is a little.. too prominent?
@Starker:
Why is it that if someone thinks anything is nice about THIEF you have to come in and shoot them down for being positive at all? Jeez, it's not as if life has to be black and white. There are things some of the people in this thread like and dislike, they're not all gung-ho for or against the new game. Having said that, I don't like the XP shit either, but it sounds like they have that in there for scoring. You know, to compare how you completed the mission with other people on a leaderboard I guess.
Also, I'm not sure how knew this is and if anyone's discussed it already, but it looks like Basso is making a return as well. I was looking at the (
http://www.thiefgame.com/) THIEF site a little while ago and while scrolling through much to my surprise they were talking about Basso. In addition, there was a sign in the background that said 'Crippled Burrick Pub' :D

Vae's been complaining about a
lot more then that.
EDIT: BTW, I have no issue with headshots as such. My default assumption back in 1998 was that head shots would do more damage. I suspect that even for you, the real issue is probably the xp bonus and associated popups that go with it.

@sNeaksieGarrett
I haven't seen a single thing I've liked so far and a lot of things that I have disliked. Is it really such a surprise that I have negative things to say about the game?
And I'm not against people liking things. I don't mind that people like the takedowns or other elements that I dislike. I just don't think they have a place in a Thief game.

Sure, but there are things that don't fit into a Thief game, no matter how well implemented.

Definitely more hopeful after the gamespot demo than I was after the last one. Most of the HUD elements that bothered people were missing, the hands were not so invasive and rope arrows are back and in first person. Guard AI was more lively as well.
Either they made some quick tweaks on the HUD elements after the feedback or there is a toggle option like a few of us suspected/hoped for.

You know what? Speaking for myself, I think that I could dream up a satisfactory rationale and implementation for almost every single thing they've added to the series, as long as I had the leeway to do it however I wanted.
The one exception would be the third person takedown animations, which are beyond saving afaict.
And burricks. :(
xp and focus would be powerful tools to educate new players about thief and making sure they were playing stealthy and getting the most out of the game.
The shroud would turn into how into something more or less like shadowing around the other HUD elements.
The magic would be turned into background mysticism lurking in the shadows of the new city. The old factions would be persecuted minorities also lurking in shadows.
etc

You know what? XP, focus, shrouds... they also serve to make it more gamey and less immersive. Thief used to provide a very pure stealth experience in comparison to other titles. Bringing in more action elements, RPG progression and scripted events only serves to dilute that.
Also, Thief has always been more about player skill than character skill. It was one of the main differences between it and Deus Ex.
Chade on 12/6/2013 at 04:28
Yeah, xp and focus make it more gamey, no matter what you do, so that side of the game becomes a little weaker. But you get other benefits, so ... as I said, I think it could be done in a way that I'm happy with. I didn't say it could be done in a way that makes me happy about every single aspect of it.
As for differences between thief and dx: almost every aspect of both games has substantial differences. The actions the player can choose from, the aesthetics, you name it: all very different. So yes, character progression is one difference, but that doesn't mean much.
