It just seems like they are cooking up something with a great deal more substance than Deadly was. It would be so grand to have Mr. Russell take his rightful place as Garrett! They said it wasnt a sequel or a prequel, it was a "side thing". To me, that means that it takes place right in the thick of the Thief universe.

I knew Russell wasn't a priority based on D'Astous's first response to the question, but held out hope.
Yeah, I felt the same.
Here is the original interview for those seeking to have their memory jogged:

Thief 4: Returning Voice Actors Important11 May 2009 at 15:49:29 by Tim McDonald
Stéphane D'Astous has told us that getting the same voice actors back for Thief 4 is something that Eidos-Montreal are taking "very seriously."
We spoke to D'Astous, the general manager of Eidos-Montreal, shortly after this afternoon's announcement that Thief 4 is in the works.
While he was reluctant to talk about the specifics of plot, setting, and the like, when we asked whether or not Eidos-Montreal was trying to get in touch with the original voice cast for recurring characters, D'Astous responded as follows:
"Something that is extremely clear in the forums and in the comments from the fans is to re-use the voice of Garrett, and this is obviously something that we'll consider very seriously."
This isn't exactly a confirmation that we're going to see Garrett back in the game, but if recurring characters are even a possibility, I'd guess that we'll be stealing stuff from the same time period. Considering the fan adoration for Garrett and the amount of attention D'Astous is paying to what people want, I don't think it's too much of a stretch to assume the master thief will at the very least make an appearance.

Pretty disappointing that they decided not to go with Stephen Russell. Doing so would have been a simple and effective way to win over all the diehard fans that have kept the series going over the past decade or so. I've liked a lot of what I've seen so far of the new Thief, but I think this is a huge error in judgement by EM.

Unless they have the voices for Garrett recorded already, there is always still a chance!!!!!!
Did you watch the trailer? Garrett is talking, and it ain't SR. Seems farfetched to think they'd release this trailer after 5 years of dev and then change Garrett's voice after that.

So maybe they tried but Russell had other contracts to fulfill. I'm sure we'll have the answer at some point.
I find it very hard to believe that if they really wanted him, both parties couldn't make it work. He's done other games but Garrett is his signature role and it's what made him famous (in gaming circles at least).

Oh I dont know. When was this trailer produced again? I mean, if Russell suddenly appeared as Garrett it wouldnt be an outrage amongst the fans, ya know?

It's two years old. The sound could definitely be redone. Each game in the series has at least one promo that was made before major changes were put into effect. Square-Enix has been sitting on this trailer back since the game was copying Assassin's Creed. It's probably close enough in spirit, and it cost enough, to release the thing as-is.

Yeah, I did just read on the other forum that they switched the voice actor for Hitman very late in production for the last game (back to the original guy who played him), and even the man himself SR was the voice of Booker DeWitt in the first Bioshock Infinite trailer before they switched to Troy Baker. So anything's possible, I suppose...

Sure. Who knows what the situation is. We will get to hear the reasons why at some point.

Well, I'm disappointed that Russell isn't apart of the new game. Although we only have one trailer to go off of, and as has already been pointed out, some footage in the trailer is old(or is it?) so it's possible (although I think unlikely) that Russell is back. In any case, I'm happy we're finally getting new information on this game.
If everything they say turns out to be true, I can actually see this being an interesting game.

Yep!

No gameplay, great. No point in watching this at all. The music is also extremely cringe-worthy.
