I'm stocking up on PCP now so I can join in on the rage when the first gameplay video hits. :mad:

The first preview writeups start popping up, (
http://www.gameblog.fr/news/36075-thief-nos-impressions-tout-en-infiltration) here's one on a French gaming site. Gameblog.fr is an awful news site, but the description of the preview is factual so here are the new or confirmed points about Thief (note that the journo wasn't playing the game, it was a demo):
* Body awareness with visible hands on surfaces confirmed, adds to immersion;
* Third-person only usage of the grappling hook confirmed;
* Third-person takedowns confirmed;
* Garrett is very agile. Ability to dash between shadows;
* Guards in the preview were extremely unresponsive to Garrett, making him totally invisible inside the shadows or when dashing (even in front of the guard) between shadows;
* Shadows, mist and fog are very impressive visually, the rest of the visuals are pretty but nothing extraordinary;
* Focus used to detect traps or interactive / arrow-sensitive elements confirmed;
* Lockpicking skill is influenced by leveling up system;
* Apparently, the level design is much less static this time, with the level shown being an escape from a burning building.

Level up lockpicking? :eek:
I hope that might only be a feature for the demo.
Master Thieves should have their skills as finely tuned as possible. Unless Garrett has gotten really rusty in his time away from the City.

I wouldn't keep my hopes up, knowing the studio it was only a matter of time until they'd announce some form of skill point system and leveling up in the new Thief.

Just what everyone wanted, forced 3rd-person immersion-breakers for two common actions...Unbelievably inappropriate.

So "dash" is basically an undetectable "blink", used to circumvent the "hiding challenge"...An excellent ability for removing the tension.

Lockpicking skill has a leveling up system.
Looks like we have a "lockpicking upgrade"...Why Eidos, why?

Regarding "dash" and AI, even the journalist was very surprised at how unresponsive the guards were, so we should see some improvement there in the future.
About the rest, yep. Forced third-person was already a deal breaker for me but leveling up is even worse IMO. The final proof that they don't understand the most basic premises of the game: interface minimalism and character improvement being only a factor of player skill with their tool set.
BTW, I changed "Lockpicking skill has a leveling up system" to "Lockpicking skill is influenced by a leveling up system" because the article isn't clear about the details.

Dear Builder, it's really happening... we better brace ourselves Taffers. I wonder how flashy those third person take downs will be... probably Garrett leaping off objects and tossing out one liners as he clubs the guards... "Looks like he got aHEAD of himself!". :rolleyes:
For that stupid tensionless dash ability, I am reminded of how natural and simple it was to sneak, best shown by Garrett in the Thief Dark Project opening: (
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GySn6_aclAM) Just look at that bit from 1:08 to 1:18 of him casually creeping by like a shadow, unseen... that perfection right there is what being a Thief is about, not grappling with everybody in your way and shouting 'look at me!' in every action you take. It is what is simple that is more often beautiful then complexity's.
Lockpicking upgrades... and here I thought he was so good at lockpicking already that he didnt need to learn anything else about it. I'm betting that upgrade is a bomb with a fuse on it that simply blows down the door.

(
http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2013/06/10/shadowy-the-greatest-thief-the-world-has-never-seen/) RPS reports on the ThiefTheFourth E3 trailer "...the latest Thief trailer isn’t really worth watching," other than to draw attention to all the things it isn't.

Unless the opposite's already been stated (and I didn't get the memo), I rather doubt EM will have anything coherent ready for E3; unless they've worked the kinks out of their original 10-months-in-production fiasco, but if so I'd be interested in seeing some actual gameplay involved (I get the feeling I'm asking for the moon here). However, to my dismay I find my hopes slowly crumbling that EM will create a Thief game which I'll enjoy. My disappointment regarding T4 grows more with every new bit of info EM releases.
They've got the press demo they ran with a couple of months back.

Quite the opposite unfortunately, I think the assumption is that there wont' be any since it hasn't been mentioned by EM and SE doesn't have the best history in this area.
Out of all the missteps one could be worried about concerning the upcoming game not having any type of editor has to be the one that has caused me the most pause about buying the game in the first place. Seems a really bad decision being that people are still making fan missions and keeping interest in the series alive for games released more than a decade ago.
Out of all the things I've read leading up to the games release finding out they have no plans for an editor release to the fans has to be the most groan worthy for me personally. I wouldn't even be anticipating the new game if not for the excellent Thief 2 fan missions keeping my interest in the series high.
