I blame loot glint.
Seriously, loot glint and everything that it did to the heart and soul of true Thief gameplay and elite Mission design, sums up the entirety of the disaster that is "NuThief" (Thief 3 and 4). :D

what exactly do you think they are scrambling to rework?
Well, I know how you love anonymous sources, but this is from the Polygon article:
Quote:
The current version of Thief barely resembles the initial concept, says a source. The vertical slice doesn't load inside Thief's current heavily modified version of Unreal Engine 3. Many programming tricks were necessary to run the current demonstration, like turning off non-playable character AI — the engine has trouble when too many characters are on screen.

That wasn't so anonymous since there were a couple other quotes like that I'd read by those who actually saw the demo. Of course, I've forgotten names and where the articles were posted (and since it's almost bedtime for me I have no intention of going back to find the links right now :p), but the incompletion of the demo was said to have been pretty obvious. After I read that article you've quoted from Brethren, I realized that we will probably have to wait a LOT longer for that gameplay video than we originally thought. Sounds like EM has their hands full and more than a few technical difficulties (screwups?) to unbork.

They don't have to necessarily be borks or bad design decisions that's delaying things. Game development is frightfully complicated stuff whatever you're doing. So if they had a demo candidate that just didn't run how they wanted, they have keep retooling it until it does. The issue with that isn't the delay but prematurely announcing it... But you know, they'd get hit if they delay announcing things & no doubt they were trying to build off the momentum from their last media release so were being optimistic to announce it... So I see why marketing wanted to push for a demo release, but the devs just haven't gotten there yet.

But the odd thing is, they have a demo -one that they showed off to a whole bunch of media members and one that got a fairly good reception. How is this demo not good enough for the general public? We're not really talking about a demo anyway, just video of gameplay footage. My guess is that they're seriously retooling some things in response to the general public's response to all the feature articles.

Makes sense, Dema and, yeah, it does seem a very complicated business. My impression is that they were clearly ready to roll otherwise there is no way B1skit would have said 'in a few days' - but they were waiting on something/somebody... and now that something/somebody is the cause of the delay. Unfortunate, but at times unavoidable.... I know even in my ordinary life I have to change plans because other parties have had their plans changed etc.

I also found this very odd. We can only
hope that our responses are not only being heard, but
listened to. Unfortunately I'm inclined to believe the delay is being caused by the fact that there were too many aspects of the video/game that were borked and needed to be fixed and tweaked before just the 'demo' is ready for public viewing. Unless, of course, EM is in the process of doing another 'house cleaning' and is gearing up to hire an all Nu team of devs for T4. :ebil: Personally, I find it ridiculous as well as dismaying that this team spent almost an entire year working on one (apparently unviewable) demo. Does anyone still wonder why they're behind schedule?
At this point, I doubt anything they do would surprise me anymore.
:tsktsk:

There was a specific reference to them reworking the gameplay demo because they weren't happy with it in at least one of the articles.

Very nice...
I can't even remember seeing that one. :o
