Skyrim ... some optional kill-cams
Wait. Do you mean there was a way to turn that dripping shit off? How?

Im sorry Tomi, but if the Necromancers Spire in Thief II is the highlight of your exploration in the Thief series, Im afraid you missed quite a bit. Perhaps you need to go back and boot up The Dark Project and start from scratch.

Oh, and please don't call it 'Teef', I find that just childish and even a bit insulting towards the developers.
They started it!

Damned if they do, damned if they don't. If they come up with some new ideas that aren't exactly like something from classic Thief, some people will shoot them down and claim that they don't belong in their Thief. I can't see anything wrong with "stealing" the best features from other games, the older games are not so perfect that they can't be improved in any way.
Jokes aside, though, most of the fans seem to have been able to accept many of the changes in TDM. Maybe they are not as close-minded as you think?

Pfft :p It probably wasn't
the highlight for me, but it certainly was one of the most memorable ones. TDP and TMA are one of the few games that I've ever finished multiple times, but I don't intend to go back to them any time soon... or perhaps I'll have a quick play through before Thief 4 is released!
I loved the city missions in both TDP and TMA, I wish that there had been more of those actually, but I also feel that the city in general could have felt a bit more "alive". But... I think I'm straying a bit off the topic already. :p

It's been mentioned a couple of times now that taking the piss out of people's pronunciation is not welcome here.

I haven't played TDM so I can't really comment on that. However, I had a conversation about this in another thread some weeks ago, and it seems that things haven't always been all rosy.

TDM probably didn't have to deal with a flock of die-hard fanatics either, at least not on this scale.
Quote Posted by Renzatic
Actually, they did. There were some people who talked about TDM about the way some people are talking about T4 now.

TDM has been roundly brow-beaten by FM fanatics who love the Dark Engine more than Garrett 'n' stuff.
So I suppose that us Thief fans aren't too easy to please. :p

It was a joke that played on Tomi's notion of fans acting childishly. Not making fun of anyone's pronunciation.

Then maybe EM/Squeenix should look at TDM developers for how to handle the criticism?

I still stand behind my opinion that there wasn't much exploring like that in TDP or TMA either. Yes, you could occasionally break into some apartment in the city and steal the valuables, or find some open window or the perfect spot for a rope arrow that lets you climb on another rooftop and gives you a safer route towards your objective (etc), but a lot of the time these alternative paths were quite obvious and it was just a question of which route you want to choose. You're all going to hate me for mentioning Assassin's Creed in the same breath with Thief (I already feel guilty about it too, and I actually
liked AC!), and I know that this isn't the best possible comparison, but even in AC there are usually many alternative ways to reach your target... is it really
exploring though? I don't think so, but I guess it all depends on what your definition of exploring is.
Tomi, gotta say, I couldn't disagree more with your assessment of classic Thief in regards to exploration - IMO, there were so many little holes and crannies to explore, alternate routes, and sub stories that had nothing to do with you main objectives, to me Thief is the epitome of exploration, probably only surpassed by large scale open world games (which are in a completely different category than Thief anyway). So, give me a point of reference - what games do you consider to be high on the exploring side of things? I'd be very interested to know.

Well, I recall a lot of the criticism of TDM being more about people thinking the look of Doom 3 was caused by the game engine and automatically assuming TDM would look the same. They didn't realize doom 3 mainly looked that way due to the design of certain textures and the use of stark black lighting.
There was disbelief that we could pull off such a large undertaking as well. No money, limited resources, and unable to use any of the Thief IP.
A whole mix of things thrown at us...lots of critiques of our early work, but very few offers to help make it better.
Kind of a different situation since we actually interacted with the community...whereas the developers of T4 don't.
