Here is a general statement for you all of how Thief and nuThi4f fans view the franchise. Thief fans are passionate about the Thief games. NuThi4f fans are passionate about video games. Slapping a Thief title on it, having gameplay designed around a shadow system, and having the main character as Garrett is all that is required because hey it's another video game!!!

I don't actually fit that label though.
I'm a Thief fan and passionate about the Thief games. I guess you could label me as a NuThi4f fan too - but this is because I'm passionate about the Thief games and I'm hoping the new game will turn out good. As anyone else, I've seen/heard too little to make any fair judgment at this point in time.
Where I don't fit the label is I'm not passionate about video games at all. I have only played a handful in my lifetime; but they are what I personally consider to be exceptionally good games, of course.

LAME! :p
Seriously, think about it. Including the "hardcore fans" in the development of the game? Is that what they are trying to do with this kit? I have to say, I dont know what this new team is doing, but they are on a certain path to either creating a true masterpiece or a master disaster. Either way, I see them as doing it creatively and with a certain audacity that would rattle 'ol Gettlewaithe himself! On the other hand, Might and Magic X wisely has an actual panel of "hardcore fans" working directly with the team to incorporate key elements of the series. But then again, the team itself is also comprised of fanatics. No, they dont seem to be ashamed of making a classic old school crpg. At last! Ive found the map to the fabled lost treasure of JibboBoxx!!! Goodbye, fools... Im off to the desert of DOOM!!!! Mwwaahahahahaaaaaa!!!!!

Well fwiw I'm going to take that fan kit and use it to construct a site which is all about the gameplay mechanics of all the Thief games.
I'll highlight where Thief 3 went wrong in that respect and when (if!) Thief 4 comes out it'll be added to the comparison and properly measured against its predecessors.
You all know me, I don't deal in maybes or half-measures; if they bork anything it'll be there in glowing letters with my usual delightful assessment of the intellect, or lack thereof, required to f%ck things up so royally. And there will be some mess-ups, no question. I can't imagine this game being as perfect as it could be if it were given back to a reformed LGS with a ton of tech and funding, but that doesn't mean it won't be Thief and it doesn't mean it won't be good.

I am hoping that many other fans with the capabilities to do the same will follow suit. This really is at the simplest level an opportunity to spread the word about Thief: The Dark Project, and *cough* Thief II, you know, to keep the majesty of the series alive.

A fab idea and its good this information has proved useful to you. Good luck with the blog. :thumb:

Hi everyone,
I am new here, but I have TTLG as my bookmark in whatever browser since 2008 as a source of wonderful LGS games updates and community content. This was also the first site where I have stumbled upon The Dark Mod.
Ok, that was just some sort of introduction, now to the point - I am overly skeptical about this new 'Teef', my first thoughts about it were - poor developers could not come up with their own ideas so they had to steal it (how ironic). I would absolutely liked new game in Thief universe, with Garret being one of the main NPC's since that could fit the story. But this whole non-sense about 're-designed Garret' is just laughable. How can someone call that man a Garret when he certainly does not look like him or talk like him? Then I heard it is 'Reboot' and it was taken to another level. At least new Deus Ex had a new character. I see this new Reboot trend as something very bad, but very tolerated in game industry. I can't imagine what would happen if somebody would want to make Platoon or Clockwork Orange films again. It happens in film industry, but it is already in such low level, while gaming industry is not. Also I will not be pleased at all if the game will look or remind me of Dishonored or Assasin Creed. And I certainly won't be pleased if there will be no dubstep in trailers, slow-motion, explosions and QTE's. Did the developers lost their creativity or am I just too much negative?

Damned if they do, damned if they don't. If they come up with some new ideas that aren't exactly like something from classic Thief, some people will shoot them down and claim that they don't belong in their Thief. I can't see anything wrong with "stealing" the best features from other games, the older games are
not so perfect that they can't be improved in any way. Oh, and please don't call it 'Teef', I find that just childish and even a bit insulting towards the developers. :erg:

Hmm, I can only name a few game reboots but quite a lot of film remakes. Most of these remakes have been pretty bad (from what I've heard, I don't watch that many films) but there are some exceptions too. I don't like the sound of this Thief reboot thing either, but it doesn't mean that they're necessarily going to change everything from classic Thief - I hope so anyway!

I would definitely visit your site. I hope you really do this, SE. I don't know anything about the kit, but am wondering if you'll be allowed to do this? I had the impression that EM wanted people to use the kit to make more T4 fan sites only.

But that's the point, Tomi; they
already have changed everything from classic Thief. Garrett is
not the Garrett we've known and loved, either in appearance or voice. Classic Thief (and I'm deliberately not including TDS here)
didn't have auto-switching from 1st to 3rd person, parkouring sequences, wallhugging, timed speed-runs, and severely limited exploration of rooftops and city streets. Classic Thief
had magic, and burricks, and zombies and haunts. Besides, EM has already stated more than once that they are 'reinventing' Thief, and NOT making it just for the Thief fans. As I've already said, I really, truly
wanted to love this game, but from everything I've read released by EM so far regarding T4, it's beginning to sound more and more like T4 will just end up being a hodge-podge combination of Dishonored (which was epically great, btw, but if I want to play it I'll just load it up again), Assassin's Creed, and DX:HR.

I was already working on this to post as an article on my blog. I'm just going to modify it and add what we know about Thief 4 - the original article was just going to be about Thief 1/2/3 and the gameplay mechanics of them. With a bit about Simulated vs Player Skill thrown in.
Doing it with the Thief 4 fan kit just means I'll be talking a lot more about what Thief 4 is doing and how it could be done if done properly; to appeal to alternate play styles whilst still allowing for a proper Thief experience.
