What does "specific climbing areas" mean though. Are we talking scripted sequences or what?
This line, "The 1st person climbing from the classic Thief games is still present." certainly sounds good, but it's confusing.

It sounds like an Assassin's Creed or Tomb Raider manner of designated climbable walls will be in 3P, and the grappling claw (i.e., "climbing from the classic game") will still be in 1P. That's my interpretation. I mean the term "specific vertical navigation sections" pretty much speaks for itself as a designated parkour/climbing structure.

Hmmm, I get the impression from the comment about the playtesting that occasionally vertical navigation benefits from a 3P view. They are saying it isn't like this every time, only certain areas in the game. Otherwise its classic 1P view.
Sounds acceptable to me and hopefully we'll see for ourselves in the gameplay footage.

I would guess that it means that mantling onto surfaces as in previous games is first-person but climbing a rope, pipe or other extended vertical object/space will be in third-person.

Not sure exactly what that means.
It probably means the playtesters complained about looking at a wall or some such thing. Seriously, if certain climbing situations are 'hindered' by first person, that's a fault of the level design not the first person camera.
As long as it can be turned off completely, I don't care but if it's stuck on all the time.

I really don't give a flying rat's butt how EM justifies sudden switches from 1st to 3rd person perspective; it breaks any immersion you may have been experiencing in the game at that moment. I totally agree with NH that it's 'a fault of the level design not the first person camera', and will go one further to add that imo it's also a fault of the playtesters. In 1st person you should still be able to look left, right, up, and down (to a degree); maybe the playtesters thought that was too restrictive and decided it was so much more kewl to be able to see their character performing death-defying climbs/parkour moves rather than to stay in the moment and remain immersed in the game. No matter how limited the switches to 3rd person are, they still take you out of the moment and break your immersion.

There is that angle too, which I agree with. They say the playtesters are carefully screened to make sure they're of the appropriate audience for the game, but I can't imagine anyone who prefers first person suddenly changing there mind during playtesting and saying, this sucks I need to see more around me. First person is all about seeing through the characters eyes.
The leaps in logic presented to justify some of the decisions made in this game are indeed baffling.

Yeah, I'm getting rather tired of EM's special brand of 'logic'. Wondering why they don't just say, 'We think it's cool and gimmicky and trendy so we're doing it this way. This is what WE want to do.' Bottom line still is that they're going to try to appeal to every type of gamer possible and that could end up being tragic. At least for a Thief game. I really hope they release that damned gameplay vid soon. The suspense is getting to me.

There has now been three weeks of delay...If EM has chosen wisely, they'd be busy correcting as much folly as possible.

Footage from the demo was originally intended to be shared with the public, but a source says those plans were recently scrapped due to internal unhappiness with the quality of the captured footage.
