While some may rejoice in the news of 'the Focus ability', 'slow-motion combat sequence', timed sequences (missions?), the absence of S. Russell, the new 'complicated and complex' replacement for the old reliable light bar, Garrett's new ninja-like appearance and his new voice, Garrett’s newfound agility and his collapsible bow (which 'will make him a less subtle knife in the dark at times), wallhugging, the separation from the Keeper storyline of the past three games, the seriously limited 'lean' ability, and forced 3rd person sequences, others may not welcome these changes so readily.
Come on now Dia, who exactly has been
rejoicing in the news of the absence of S. Russell? I think we would have
all liked to see Russell back as Garrett, but what's wrong with
not hating the new voice actor? His voice may not be everyone's cup of tea obviously, but I find him to be a pretty decent replacement. It still doesn't mean that I'm here celebrating the absence of Mr Russell.
"The new 'complicated and complex' replacement for the old reliable light bar" ... we've been through this already, but you're just misinterpreting things on purpose now. The light bar may be gone, but it's been replaced with an orb that does pretty much the same thing. There's nothing complicated or complex about that. That's how I understand it anyway. The lighting system itself is complicated and complex (lots of complex mathematics and stuff, because the dynamic lighting obviously makes things more complicated), as it should be - how can you complain about that when in a game like Thief the light and shadows are the most important thing!
The timed sequences, as described in one of the hands-on articles, do not stop you from proceeding in the game if you're too slow. Failing does
not mean instant "game over". You just have to find another way to approach the task in hand, another entrance to a building or another way to get past the guards. I don't like timed missions either, but this kind of a thing doesn't sound too bad to me. It adds a little tension (but not too much) when you know that there may be a little bonus "reward" in for you if you're good, but there's nothing that stops you from exploring stuff as much as you like either.
Garrett's newfound agility and collapsible bow... The collapsible bow is just a visual thing, it doesn't bother me much. And it seems quite practical for a thief to have one. Considering what other tools and weapons we've had in the older games, it's definitely not too high-tech either and makes sense. Newfound agility? I may have missed something here, but hasn't Garrett always been pretty agile? Being able to mantle high walls easily, climbing up and down rope arrows, jumping long distances... as long as there's no wall-running or something in new Thief, it should be okay.
Don't know what you mean by the "limited lean ability", but I agree with the forced 3rd person sequences.

You've played DX:HR, right? It's like in that game, where if you want to look around a corner you have to lean up against a wall and peek around. Only now instead of switching to a 3rd person perspective, it remains in 1st, and throws up Garrett's hands as a visual cue.
edit: which now that I think about it, could mean they're also bringing back lean forward. You could do that in HR. If you're saddled up against a low edge, you could peek over it and look down.
In fact, everything we've seen points towards it playing quite a bit like HR did. The only difference being that it sounds like they've cut down on the times it takes you out of 1st person, only limiting those when you're climbing a rope or scaling a wall.

Some things that don't bother me might bother you, and vice versa.
That's pretty much what I'm saying.

The one thing I've always been trying to say all this time around here is that just because it's different, doesn't necessarily mean it's bad.
I'm not saying it's bad or that it's going to be bad, just that so far a lot of what I'm hearing, etc., just doesn't appeal to
me. Kind of the same way as when I see a preview for a movie about something that just doesn't interest me; I won't say that the movie is bad or good, just that I don't have any desire to see it. And my disagreement with those who think T4 sounds like it could be a good thing shouldn't in any way be construed as a wish for T4 to turn out badly; as I said, it may not sound appealing to me, but I hope those who want to play it end up enjoying it tremendously.

Some people are being hipsters, since the majority of the internet has wisely agreed that the game is shit, these people feel the need to do the opposite. Aggressively.
Several of them are likely being handed cash by Eidos to do a little astroturfing. This is pretty common practice in the industry these days.
I only just saw this.
I... I don't know what to say. I've been busted! :o
...
Seriously though, you're now a serious candidate to win
the Silliest Post of the Month award for that. :p
The majority of the internet hasn't even heard of Thief obviously, and the "majority" isn't the same as "the most vocal people" anyway. I'm sure that a lot of people saw these videos and thought that they were pretty cool, but didn't feel the need to comment on them... or jump to any hasty conclusions just yet. The few people who have actually
played or
seen Thief 4 in action have written mainly positive things about the game.
And if I was being such a hipster, shouldn't I be fighting against a big corporate company and their mainstream AAA title?

Cool! How much are they paying you? EM sends me regular shipments of hot pockets and packets of aspartame every first of the month for saying good things about that stupid game of theirs no one in their right mind would ever like.
I mean...uh...give it a chance, people.
...oh shi...

You can be a hipster contrarian.
