leaping to conclusions so you'll have something to complain about?

Not sure why you are going along with the misguided Renz, but yeah! Remember, Tomi, that I am not part of the complaining club. For some strange reason I get lumped in though, because I am overly fanatical about the classic crpgs/Thief? Anywho, my stupid post history reveals that I have never complained about *any* game, short of ripping Deadly a new one! Right now, I am surprised and confused about this Stephen Russell issue. Some sort of explanation would be nice... and soon. Unless you are completely unabreast of what hath transpired here! I guess I am a little pissed right now. Im soooooooo sorry.

* The terrible prose. "Some believe the perfect heist lies in the preparation, some say it lies in the timing... for me it's a way of life." Huh? It doesn't even make sense.
It would have made more sense if you hadn't conveniently left out some parts from the quote.

Fair enough, but don't you pretty much dislike modern games in general though? So technically you may never have complained about *any* game, but you've complained about *every* (modern) game. :p
Meh, I'm just annoyed by the constant bickering in here. The "true fans" vs the ones who are just looking forward to playing a new Thief game. I've seen people called "apologists" and "corporate whores" just because they don't join the T4 bashing... I don't think I'd even want to be a so-called true fan if you have to be so fanatic. I thought that we're all fans of Thief here, and we would all love to see a cool new Thief game, but I'm beginning to wonder if that's the case. :erg:
Of course there are a bit more sane people too with some very good criticism, and that's totally cool - it's just as boring to read endless praise and blind acceptance too. We can't all like the same things and EM could certainly learn some things from the fans of Thief who have played the series for over a decade. But then there are those who just won't accept
anything new. Eidos could release any harmless and small piece of information about the game, and those moaners would rip it apart and twist it into something terrible that doesn't even make sense. It seems that those people have already decided that the game will suck, even though we still haven't got much information about the game itself. How can you say that the gameplay will suck when we haven't even seen the game in action yet? In a way I feel a bit sorry for these people who seem to have set their expectations so unrealistically high that nothing in the world will please them... Of course they'll end up being disappointed if their attitude has been that negative from day one! I can empathise with them as I'm a sucker for nostalgia too, but at least I'm really looking forward to see something
new. I'll be happy if I can play as Garrett again and enjoy some good stealthy action and a fascinating story - that's "all" it takes for it to be a good Thief game. Perhaps the game will indeed suck and I'll be bitterly disappointed when the release date comes, but then again it could turn out to be the best Thief game ever too - who knows? We just got to wait and see.
All we are saying, is give Thief a chance... :pSo yeah, I thought that the trailer was actually pretty cool, in a way even better than I expected. Yes, there's a lot of fast-paced action in it, probably a bit more than I'd like to see in the game, but then again it's a
trailer so that's hardly a surprise. Just take another look at the classic Thief trailers and intros - you don't hear people complaining
"OMG Garrett is a thief, not an assassin!!!" when Garrett kills a guard in T1&T2 intros. And yes, it's also a shame that Stephen Russell doesn't seem to be in Thief 4. The new guy doesn't sound bad at all, but we've all gotten so used to Russell's voice already that Garrett won't be the same without him. But that's small fries if the
game itself is good, and so far all the signs point that way... apart from the possibility of "forced" third person view, which I probably don't want to see. :erm:
I can see a lot of similarities with Dishonored, but then again Dishonored borrowed a lot from Thief, so I don't think it's a terrible crime. Besides, I really like the new visual style, even if it's a bit
too dark and depressing. I hope it's just the visual style that is so overly dark though, as humour was a big part of the charm of the old games, but I somehow doubt that we'll get any funny conversations or servants with silly voices this time... I'm afraid it's time for
Thief: Serious Business in that matter, and while that'd be a shame as well, that's not exactly a deal breaker for me either.
Can't wait for the first gameplay videos or some new information to be released.

You are right, we are all Thief fans. The concerns we have right now is that the direction they are taking the game will make it not so much Thief anymore, but a standard modern 3rd person action game, with the name Thief stamped on the "box". We just want to know before we buy, or god forbid preorder, the game. This is our concern dude.
Renzatic on 3/4/2013 at 19:28
Nothing they've shown thus far points towards it being a dumbed down 3rd person action game though. They've gone out of their way to mention ghosting and no-kill nonviolent mission completions in interviews. They've even mentioned ghosting in the trailer. From that alone, we can at least tell that they know Thief is mostly about being quiet and sneaking about.
As far as that goes, I highly doubt it'll happen.
Goldmoon Dawn on 3/4/2013 at 19:30
I sure hope they know what they are doing! I have no choice but to wait and watch what they do next. If these motion capture scenes of theirs are *that* important to discard Russell *and* its not a 3rd person game, it better damn well be worth it!
Renzatic on 3/4/2013 at 19:43
I dunno why it would be a third person game. Some of the biggest selling titles of the current generation were all first person exclusive. They wouldn't be doing it just to make a quick buck. Maybe because Assassin's Creed was 3P, but if they did that, it'd be dumb as hell. I think (hope) the devs know they should keep you inside Garrett's head at least 90% of the time.
The motion capture scenes being important enough to discard Russell? Cutscenes and interludes. They're the only time you're likely to see new Garrett without a mask on and chatting away. It probably doesn't directly relate to the gameplay, where Garrett wouldn't be talking even if it were 3rd person all the time.
It all being worth it? You're right. It better be. I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt. Lets just hope they don't let us down.

Great Builder! I would love to see a new
Thief game. I don't want it to be cool by gamers' and developers' standards at all. Kewl should never be the reason to implement something in a Thief game. It's tempting and poisonous! I don't want a cool game called Thief, I want more Thief! It's what I've always wanted since I played the end mission of my first Thief game. It's what brought me here to TTLG. After TDS, I stopped wishing for more Thief, and just decided I'd rather know more about what the devs had to leave out, where they were going with the games. And now that Thief[4] is coming, I want them to make the best Thief experience that happens to be a game since TDP! I don't trust them at all! I don't trust the industry to care about what made Thief so special to me an others here (we) as fans. EM never gave me anything to secure my loyalty, nor the industry as a whole. I owe them nothing and will not swallow whatever they crap out with much straining just because it borrows ideas from Thief games. Make it in any of the hundreds of right ways, or make a new stealth game altogether!
I am a fan of Thief, not at all a fan of gaming and the gaming industry. Think on that, real hard, and realize what you look for in games is nothing that I do.

Well, I've been banned from the Eidos forums for 'repeated off topic posts' after a supposed warning. Unless they sent it while I was asleep and someone else continued to post under my name, then I did not receive ANY warning in my PM inbox, nor was there any obvious warnings directed to me within the forums that I saw.
I've never been banned, arrested, detained, outlawed or thrown a punch in my entire life. I've certainly said a few pointed words, but everyone is angry about Stephen Russell. Nobody should be banned for this.
Must be nice, I've been trying to get my account deleted over there.

Good for you, MissyK! Tell me how weird they make that for you. They should just grant the request but they won't. Let me know if they start putting copyright disclaimers in the PMs they send you, too.
