It cracks me up that even after we all saw the stupid leaked 2 year old trailer, and even watched the modified one with the REAL Garretts voice on top of it, which filled me with that old feeling of genuine excitement, these knuckleheads still went ahead and released the trailer yesterday. Its like they are scraping the bottom of the barrel to see if there are any more dollar bills still clinging down there. LOL

No, it means it's not going to be
Thief. Period. Full Stop. There is literally nothing in terms of gameplay, theme, or character which shares any similarity to the original trilogy except in the broadest of terms.
Gameplay? We haven't seen anything showing us that one way or the other, but a thief who breaks into buildings to steal things while being completely unseen sounds pretty close to the original. While it probably won't play 100% exactly the same (Garrett is likely to be more acrobatic in this game, and...yeah, there probably will be some 3rd person elements thrown about), that doesn't mean it'll be a complete departure from the core gameplay mechanics of the originals.
Theme? Same. It's a little different, but you're a thief in a big nameless city that's a hodgepodge of medieval and victorian architecture and style (with the game leaning more towards the victorian this go round).
Characters? It's got Garrett. Not exactly the Garrett we remember, but still Garrett. Judging from the screenshots, it's also got at least a few references to the Keepers lying around. Hammerites? I wouldn't be surprised if they were still around. Same with the Pagans. Plus the big bad possibly being the oft mentioned, never seen City Baron.
It's not a completely different game. Rather, it's EM's take on Thief. Kinda like Frank Miller's Batman wasn't the same as Bob Kane's, but obviously drew inspiration. And Christopher Nolan's Batman wasn't the same as Frank Miller's, but drew inspiration from both. This is what a reboot is. It's someone else's take on the same themes, story, and characters.
You don't have to like it, but you don't have to freak out just because it's completely different, either.

Are you serious?! What is a thief game without Garrett, Keepers, Hammers, and Pagans?! Well, you know... its still got "garrett" and I wouldnt be surprised is there was some remnants of Keepers?! There had better damn well be some remnants of Keepers! What are they going to do, reinvent the entire series with all new factions?!?! Might as well make a game that isnt called Thief then!

...and since they're an entirely new set of artists, level designers, and what have you, working on a series that's already had a satisfactory conclusion and came out a decade ago, they've decided to put their own spin on the series. Give it their own touch, rather than try and ape LGS' nearly unapeable style.
Totally agreed. I like the trailer, imho it does quite nicely capture the atmosphere of Thief (okay, could've done without that ninja leap) without trying to re-create everything exactly like before. Had they done that, I'm pretty sure the wail of complaints would be even louder.
Not hearing Russell as Garrett's voice was my biggest disappointment, but if the game is otherwise good, I can live with that.

Ayup, lets drag poor Garretts corpse around kingdom come, hopefully catching a few dollar bills along the way.

The developers have already mentioned the Keepers by name, so we at least know they're in there. The City Guard are the main bad guys this time, so it's not surprising we're seeing more of them than the other factions in these early days of unveiling.

No Hammers/Mechanists and no Pagans = No Thief. Thats the new name... NoThief.
They better get busy and start producing some damage control... soon!

Do you know for a fact there's no Hammers or Pagans in the game, or are you just leaping to conclusions so you'll have something to complain about?

Like I said, they better start revealing some worthwhile information about this little gem of theirs... and SOON! :)
