**EM in interview : 'It's easy to fall into the trap of trying to please everyone - by bjc_sp

Edit - I swear there was a post from Dia just now! My post is in response to that one...
The silver lining for me, is that in time new fans will inevitably come to realise the striking majesty of Thiefs past. I do not doubt that, just like with Deadly, a new Thief title will force the new and old to clash head on! :ebil: We must convert as many of these souls as we can to Dark Project.

There are people who know exactly what they are expecting and they are really demanding so I guess it's impossible to please everybody. Well they could have tried to please, I don't know...the existing fanbase perhaps? the core Thief fans who want Stephen Russell back?

So we wanted to make sure we respect the fans. lol

Yeah, GmD; there was a post by me, but I deleted it because it was so horribly negative and not productive in the least. And because I'm way over-tired and shouldn't post anything anywhere when I'm in that condition. I just plain don't like the direction T4 seems to be heading, and that's just according to everything I've seen, read, & heard from EM so far. Just sounding more and more like an update of TDS. I'd better go get some shut-eye before I inadvertently start a pointless argument with someone. Or maybe I should say futile argument. That's it, I'm off.

Well, I would definitely say it's not a minus...But that's kind of sad, when neutral things start looking like pluses because they're in the company of minuses.
Yeah, I just wasn't in the mood at looking at the negative stuff, which there was certainly plenty of in the article. I must admit, I am not hating EM as much as I was, because at least they are being a bit more honest about dumbing the game down. I can't even express how much I despise pandering to markets developers know they have no interest in catering to, EM seems to have noticed this strategy wasn't working for them very well, as they seem more honest lately. I'll take honest bad news over sugar coated BS.

I still think they are completely fabricating this whole "a lot of people who thought the controls in Thief I were too complex and had to walk away" line of reasoning. I was there, and I dont remember *any* of that. I mean, seriously? The easiest game to control in the history of gaming?! It scares me to think that the bulk of this new team has never mastered The Dark Project, rather has prolly "studied" gameplay videos, and watched the cutscenes. Oh lordy...

Is there anybody who thinks the controls are bad for all the Thief games? And are there people who think TDS's controls are a welcome relief after playing Dark Engine Thiefs?

Wonder how EM would feel about ARMA 3's 9 stances, most of which I believe have 2 leaning levels.

I remember years ago, (
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=120596&p=1719888&viewfull=1#post1719888) Digi said somewhere in the forums here that whatever Eidos does to Thief 4, it's going to actually make us wish for TDS again. I'm not saying he's right yet, but I think he had a pretty good feeling about what was going to happen based on his first hand experience working for a larger gaming company. In the end, they want to make it simple for everyone to play their game, even at the cost of some critical features. We may bitch about TDS, but it didn't have a lot of the goofy stuff that EM is proposing (Swoop. Focus, etc). The light gem, the control scheme, the magical elements, Stephen Russell, etc. - Ion Storm at least left all of those things intact, they knew that was core to Thief.
To be fair, a few of the things Ion Storm left out (rope arrows, swimmable water, etc.), EM
may bring back in. It just seems like they're missing on some of the really important stuff.

Yeah, it's a mixed bag...But that bag has a high percentage of seemingly bad things, and a lot of those bad things look to be incongruent with the core design...That's what's causing the duress for many in the fanbase...We want a THIEF game, and right now, it doesn't look like we will get one.

Too many fundamentals have been cut out or replaced, and not with better elements. They've already ensured I won't be able to participate as a player, so now it's looking to what's left, and each good and relieving bit of news is countered with 2 or 3 bad bits.
