**EM in interview : 'It's easy to fall into the trap of trying to please everyone - by bjc_sp

Yeah. I mean honestly. It's obvious none of you are going to like this game whatsoever. I wonder why you all torture yourselves by continuing talking about it.
jtr7 on 12/4/2013 at 02:51
Perhaps the same reasons you torture yourself reading our posts? We would've liked the game, and there's a lot we do like, but there's no end to the crap we've never liked replacing what we loved!
We, as in, more than just myself.

I'm just going to go hide in the Dark Mod forums and enjoy the sanity there.
No NH, you must stay with us whilst we all process the pain.

You've got to be shitting me...Debating whether focus can be disabled?
I have said it before, and it bears repeating here. Either this team knows something truly magnificent that we dont know and are about to unleash a classic game, or they are going to blow it Part II, and enjoy the same results that Deadly enjoyed, and worse. :ebil:

"we want the same amount of challenge, but within the game and not within the inputs."
So what this means is that to crouch and sneak slowly across a room, I don't have to hit Shift, X, A, B, numpad 0, B, B, 3, spell "matilda", and then bash my mouse against my forehead?
GODDAMNIT, EM! IT ISN'T THIEF IF I DON'T HAVE TO ATTEMPT MANTLING 15 TIMES TO PULL MY CHARACTER UP ON TOP OF A WAIST HIGH WALL! YOU JUST DON'T GET IT!
That's somewhat of an exaggeration. That's not what people are getting irked about and you know it. Would be nice if you didn't have to do the 'mocking' of some peoples concerns all the time. You're cool, you're progressive. We get it kid, you're hip and we need a new hip. I'm not embarrassed that my opinions aren't cool or mainstream. There are countless games out there for the masses...it would just be nice to know there are still some games for the rest of us who actually like a well rounded challenge. I've never found shift + w or ctrl + w to be particularly difficult. Patience is a virtue yet it's also practically extinct. GIMMEE MOAR ACTION NOW!!!

True. I made the mistake of coming down here again. It was my bad.
I mean you all had Stephen Russell post on the boards. That's incredible. Maybe he would've talked to us a little more, given us some insights into his past experience with the series. I wouldn't have expected him to go all out, but who knows. A couple of interesting posts could've come up.
But, of course, it immediately degenerated into yet another goddamn blame game-crucify EM spiel, and probably ruined any chance of that ever happening. It was about damn shameful.
You know. I can understand your disappointment. I really can. Russell was one of the key parts that made old Thief so memorable. The one thing you all need to learn is handling your disappointment with a little grace and poise.

Renz' scares me. He hasn't stopped doing that from day one. Even when we agree, he sees something else. Apples vs. oranges. *shrug*

As a game designer, which kind of challenge would you prefer your players to face? The one offered up by the gameplay, or that offered up by an overly obtuse control scheme?
That's what dude guy above was talking about, and it's something I agree with 100%. A challenging game does not have to be hard to control. It needs to be quick and intuitive. You pick it up, and you know how to play. The challenge comes from what the game itself offers beyond that.
It does not mean the game is being dumbed down.

Look man, Stephen Russell is *our* iconic voice and because of our rabid passion, he did drop by and say wow. He is not a fanatic of Thief itself, my friend. He never played countless hours of the classic masterpiece, Thief: The Dark Project. We did. Unlike you, *he* gets that. Our relationship with him ends there. Sure, there will be straggler fans interested in his acting and such. Therefore, now that he has graced these hallowed halls with his presence, we can get back to the matter at hand. :ebil: So, of course... youre in! Now, you just have to prove it. You did have a point for being among us, right? :ebil:

As long as anyone thinks the 1990s and tech limits and navigation hassles and bugs/glitches weak or underdeveloped or rushed development have anything to do with where I and others are coming from, there will be no seeing eye to eye. Thief should do the basic s better and expanded. Improve mantling all around without automating it, creating mantling zones, putting the character on rails, or chucking out entire movement possibilities for a lack of player character model animation.
Thief is the game that keeps on giving, ironically. I never knew it would mean so much to me for so long, and that it would lead to people and opportunities, and especially, give me something to smile about in the lowest times of my life. But it has, and the people who made it have my loyalty and gratitude.
