EM's chucked out what they didn't like, what they didn't understand, what they considered way over-the-top--things we love!

And isn't that what they're supposed to do? Why would they have some features in
their game that
they don't like?

And we come full circle yet again: Dont call the game *Thief* then. Make your own "stealth" title...

"Today's gamers"... "mainstream"... you only forgot to mention "dumbing down" and "the masses".
Aren't we all "today's gamers" here? Or haven't you guys played any other games since TDP/TMA/TDS?
To put it in proper context, you have to go back to the late 90's. There were "today's gamers" then too. The fact is gamers really haven't changed much over the years, only technology and the large corporate game industry have. Gamers can be just as patient today as they were then. Gamers can appreciate a deviation from the norm now as much as they could then. EM talks like only stupid people play games now.

Well said, TMC. I agree and so far what I've read in the EM T4 interviews sounds as though EM is operating under the misconception that we're all a bunch of ten year olds who suffer from ADD.

Nicolas Cantin used these words "today's console market". He said it. He wants Thief to be a game made for them.
I wasn't a gamer in 1998. I didn't play Thief until 2001, after TDP/Gold and TMA had already been out and LGS was shut down. I wasn't a gamer outside of Thief. Oh sure, I played Diablo, Diablo II, and the Duke Nukem 3D 5-mission demo, and Blood & Magic, but I also played Solitaire and I thought those other games were a bit more interesting time-killers. I wasn't a gamer before Thief. I played Thief Gold and TDS for the first time in 2006. I've only ever played TDP and TMA all the way through twice each, both in 2001. TDS didn't make the cut for me as a game. I enjoy going through the gamefiles more than playing that thing. From 2001 to 2006, between the times I played any Thief game, I just had a copy of most of the gamefiles, not the missions or executables, but the sounds, movies, textures, and texts, and I helped a friend make maps and write stories for his D&D and pen'n'paper campaigns, based on how the Thief universe. Reading novels and writing my own stories and music, and drawing and designing things I hoped to make one day, were much more interesting to me than any of the demos I played, or articles I read in gaming magazines, always looking for the next exciting thing, rarely seeing it. To this day, Thief is a weird hiccup where a bunch of things came together that transcended mere gaming for me, and TTLG brought me together with a bunch of people who also find Thief stands out from the rest.
People in 1998 chose Half-Life over Thief: The Dark Project, and likely didn't notice the weird game with the outdated graphics. Nothing I want in Thief has any damned thing to do with 1990's anything. What I want from TDP and TMA as a STARTING point (not the be all end all, dammit) in Thief aren't 1990s things. The things I want weren't even accepted in 1998, 2000, and not even in 2004. The year the games were released is 100% irrelevant. Once you see the truth of that, your brain will explode.

So that's your main gripe with this? You feel that EM are desecrating the legacy of Thief or something?
Fair enough, if that's how you really feel. But if the new Thief turns out to be crap, can't you just pretend that it never existed and only play the first two games and live happily ever after? No one's forcing you to buy it or anything, and no one's going to make the old games go away. In my opinion the new Thief is still "Thief" enough, for now anyway. And at least I'm bloody happy that they're making another *Thief* game, not just some other stealth game.
Also, since EM has the rights to use the Thief brand, which is a fairly well-known brand, wouldn't they be foolish
not to use it?

Well, Thief 4
will be released on next-gen consoles, and I believe that console gamers still outnumber the PC gamers. Therefore, wouldn't Nicolas Cantin be a bit stupid if he didn't want Thief to be a game made for "them". This only seems to be a problem for people who think that console gamers are a bunch of ten year olds who suffer from ADD.

You may have missed it, but quite a lot of people actually noticed this weird game called Thief: The Dark Project...

You're still not much of a gamer outside of Thief, are you? I'm starting to see why New Thief is such serious business for you. Is it the only upcoming game you have any interest in whatsoever?
Personally, there are a couple dozen games coming out in the next two years I'm looking forward to, so I can't get too precious about Thief. If it's simply a good game that doesn't have much in common with the original? Good enough. If it turns out to be a huge irredeemable piece of crap? Well that would be a shame, but not the end of the world.

My dear forum cohort Tomi, I am a crpg fanatic. Ok? I *love* Thief: The Dark Project that much that if they are bringing the Thief series, name, and Garrett back after 10 years, I will be here. Desecrating the legacy? Please, dont put words into *my* mouth like you do with tldr66. The point is so much more simple than desecrating anything. If you take enough *core* elements out of a series, can you really still call it the same name? They will not desecrate the legacy of Thief, my friend. If they blow it, they will enjoy the same results that Deadly enjoyed, and worse, compliments of the horde of rabid gaming fans waiting in the wings. Satisfaction enough for me, but on the other hand, many new fans will arrive and will be quickly routed to The Cloister, wherein they mayest be reborn by fire, and see the true majesty of Thief: The Dark Project. This, is the silver lining to the announcement of a new Thief title.
