"Today's gamers are a lot less patient. They expect a lot more from the developers in terms of features and so on. Even for menus that are easy to use. For a lot of things that weren't as extensively developed back in the day. For example: control inputs.
It took a while to learn the complex controls. Numbers 1,2,3,4... There were different types of peeking: peeking forward, peeking sideways, peeking upside down... They had all these things that were very complex and it worked for the hardcore gamers, but a lot of people backed off early on because it was very difficult [to learn]. So our focus has been to say, "we want the same amount of challenge, but within the game and not within the inputs." I don't personally have the patience to learn the super, super old games and all their fidelities and hard-learned lessons. I want it to be more streamlined." ~ Daniel Windfeld Schmidt
That's just depressing...:(...This alone, disqualifies NuThief as a true THIEF game.

~spits tea across the room~
They've instead proven that it's much easier to alienate everyone.

"we want the same amount of challenge, but within the game and not within the inputs."
So what this means is that to crouch and sneak slowly across a room, I don't have to hit Shift, X, A, B, numpad 0, B, B, 3, spell "matilda", and then bash my mouse against my forehead?
GODDAMNIT, EM! IT ISN'T THIEF IF I DON'T HAVE TO ATTEMPT MANTLING 15 TIMES TO PULL MY CHARACTER UP ON TOP OF A WAIST HIGH WALL! YOU JUST DON'T GET IT!

Umm... I dont remember many problems way back then or since about the weapon numbers and other keyboard controls being a problem and too complex to learn that would cause anyone to back off, let alone "a lot of people"...
And it wasnt that the menus back then were "easy to use", it was that they *didnt interfere with the gaming world*. I know, in this elite modern age of impatient gaming, there is no way in hell that the gaming screen can just be free of debris. In my opinion, the reason developers tack so much crap onto the screen, is because the gaming worlds themselves are nothing special or memorable. Just cool looking environments that you fawn over as you run past them. Thief was built upon masterful level design, where you felt like you were alive in their virtual world.

The nightmare is actually happening.
*Although horrified, I find the courage to go back in*
"To make sure you can redeem yourself when accidents happen we have the Focus, but it's limited resource. And the ammunition and arrows are a limited resource, so you have to really pick your battles. You can't sustain your fall back plans.
So Focus is like a get-out-of-jail-card for those kind of players who just want to have fun when they get caught and want to clear the area. But in the next area they won't have many resources left, so they'll have to try a little harder. It's a balancing act right now. A debate we're having is whether you can disable Focus permanently for hardcore players who want to brag about doing it without any of the extra tools."
You've got to be shitting me...Debating whether focus can be disabled?

Do you people really assume the worst about every little thing you read?

I'm just going to go hide in the Dark Mod forums and enjoy the sanity there.

Nope.

They already fell hard into the trap of trying to please people who didn't like Thief or never cared to know, at the expense of the people who have Thief in their top 5 games of all time, 14 years on!
Renz', what assumption? It's known!
