I'm in two minds about this.
On one hand, Elite was awesome at the time but games have come on and several of the previous sequels were shocking. Could it be Just Another Space Game?
On the other, I'm intrigued.

Funny there is this and Godus coming out - both harking back to the good old days.
This looks pretty good but it'll need a solid plot for me to be really interested now. What will it do that others haven't done before? Elite may have set the benchmark but there has been a lot that has come after and built on it, no? I'm not talking about the Elite sequels.
I think I've changed as a gamer and I can't explain what I'm into anymore. Apart from artfag games of course. Bring me all your Journeys and Dear Esters any day.

I have the impression there's no plot (apart from a loose context) and whatever canon material will eventually comes out of the novel writers' minds.
My partner said that she didn't like it because, "It's just spaceships". She's just pissed because they don't have pretty green glass elf armour.
EDIT: On a replay I only just noticed the last few notes played in this video and the previous trailer. Slightly spine tingling.

The X Series is its main competition, though: (

I've been loving that series for a while. Everyone knows Elite is the spiritual grandfather of this whole line of gameplay, but they've been out of the game for a long time while the X Series has been kicking out games for the last decade and honing the model. It's got all the free-form parts down -- trading, building, pirating -- *and* its games have cool storylines you can follow if you want. So I don't know how well a new Elite could really stand out, I mean aside from the obvious name recognition. It'd have to do something really unique I think.
I don't want to be against it just to be negative though. I hope it's a good game that pushes some boundaries. I'm just actually anticipating the next X game because the previous ones have been so good IMO (save the original buggy X3 release that got fixed with patches, but they've improved since then).

Holy Inception music knock off Batman!
Yeah, Elite has top be pretty special to take on its rivals now.
On the other hand it could work if it's lean and to the point. I've noticed a lot of leaner games recently - if you can do one interesting thing very well you're onto something. Depends on price though; these simpler games aren't big or complex enough to be full price it seems.

Except the planetary landing and procedural generation from Frontier and First Encounters which are, IMO, so very important.

In X, once you start setting up your own factories, it becomes more like an economics sim that you happen to be controlling from a spacecraft. I found X2 pretty compelling but also incredibly unwieldy once you get into the logistics of dozens of factories and masses of automated support ships. Pouring over maps wondering if a sector needs more wheat or computer chips is more "company board room" than "adventures out on the frontier".
So new Elite would probably do well to stick to just you in one ship seeking your fortune in a Millenium Falcon\Firefly style.

I never found X or any other games inspired by Elite to be like playing Elite. X was far too complex to be fun for me and EVE, for example, removed direct ship control.
I think the MMO Jumpgate was the closest thing to Elite/Frontier i've played but it's a dead game so Braben will be bringing something very special as far as i'm concerned and i'm crossing my fingers. :)

You guys are explaining exactly why I love the X Series, but then I also love Paradox world sim games (Hearts of Iron, Europa Universalis, etc) so I admit my taste in byzantine complexity & economic mircomanagement isn't exactly in the mainstream.
If the new Elite does a more accessible and more action-oriented game then more power to them. A fortune-seeking adventurer in a Millennium Falcon or Firefly style does sound like a pretty cool way to take it.

Update #29 is about (
http://youtu.be/9NSMMTfwTOU) art direction. Nice to hear about how Frontier's art director plans to go about achieving recognizable mood and ambience in core star systems. Nice ships models too
Oh, and 3 days left to go.
