I think this could very well be another good addition to the TTLG co-op gaming playlist.
Oh snap, I just suggested this in the VR thread.

If anyone sets up a TTLG group on Open I'm down to join. Usually play on weekends, I'm tooling around in Empire space trying to grind my rank up so I can buy a decent fighter.

With all this talk of space trucking and getting together for some Elite coop, I keep thinking of a TTLG convoy in space, set to this tune:

I'm actually getting quite excited about the prospect of running escort for you space truckers as you flit between stations. Be nice to bring The Magpie out of storage :)
I'm also quite interested to see how this new Engineers content plays, and even though I played when they released Horizons, I still haven't done any surface buggy driving. My ship is always in dedicated combat configuration, with all cargo capacity sacrificed for extra armour. I love a good bounty hunt!

I've now put in my first hour or so - but the beginners guides I've read haven't helped much, because all the missions I can find aren't available for me, and I've only got two cargo slots. Should I just fly around and check out different stations in the hope that they'll offer me some missions, or are there any early game activities you can recommend?

I'm also interested in how to get going. So far I've found trading to be tedious and missions equally inaccessible as Thirith. In frontier the first ship was crap but it seemed easier to get going as a trader.

They did something with the 2.1 update that made it so you don't get the good missions until you've built up a decent reputation with factions in a system. I've gone from picking up bounties worth around a million to scrabbling for data courier missions worth 10K.
I think if I head back to my traditional "Home" system, I'll probably get offered better systems. I'll probably try that tonight; my home system's Arexe, so if you're around, head on over :)
But this is a symptom of something more sinister I've noticed about recent Elite development. A lot of the newer systems they've introduced seem to be more directed at the noisy, hardcore MMO crowd. So everything takes an age to do for even the smallest amount of progress. A shame really, as there was something pure about the game when everything was available to everybody as long as they had enough credits.
But the Eve crowd do seem to be one of the noisiest and most obnoxious presences on the official forums.

I've been putting in some more time, and while I still suck at the game, I'm starting to understand the systems better. It's extremely intransparent, and you could improve the learning curve without dumbing the game down, but it is fascinating, even if I'm mostly bumbling around. Still, I've managed to upgrade my Sidewinder somewhat (better power plant and power distribution), I've got ~25'000 credits to spend, so next I'll try to find a high-tech system where I can get, say, better shields and/or weapons.
Also, the first landing on a planet was glorious, in particular in VR. What was less glorious: realising only after I'd landed that I didn't have a Surface Recon Vehicle. I swear I picked a profile that had one... but then it didn't seem to carry over after I got myself killed in space.

When you're buying a vehicle bay, you need to make sure to buy an SRV to populate it with ;)
If you're on at the same time as me any time, let me know and I will gladly hop in and play with you. I need something to keep me playing the game, as my chosen role has been nerfed to oblivion thanks to the AI difficulty "enhancements".
Besides which, I can see buggy racing on planetary bodies being a GREAT laugh :D

I'll probably want to get used to the game and upgrade my Sidewinder a bit more before going coop, but once that's the case I'll definitely keep an eye out for whether you're online at the same time as me. How easy is it to find one another in-game? And are missions shared across groups?
