dethtoll, I don't have time to explain it all to you, but you have the CRA/Fannie/Freddie thing spectacularly wrong.
Those weren't the loans that exploded the housing market. The subprime loans at fault weren't issued by the banks subject to the CRA (it was independent mortgage brokers that did that) nor were they bought by Fannie/Freddie (who will only purchase loans originated in conformity with a strict criteria).
Do more research, and try to stay away from anything tainted by the pundit class when you do.
It's not wrong. It's correct. A very good friend of mine worked for Countrywide before quitting in disgust, and she told me an awful lot about what went on.
I'm not saying the banks are pure as the driven snow. Many of them acted wrongly, and many of them did not.
Without a bailout, in a free-market economy without distorting regulation, these foolish businesses would either be out of business or swallowed up by more solvent and intelligent banks.
Instead Freddie and Fannie and all the other misbehaving children are hiding under Uncle Sam's skirts.
Edit: Furthermore you appear to believe, like most leftists, unless it it originates from a media source that spends its free time sucking Obama's cock, it is false.
My sources are not mainstream media outlets, but people--a number of them who are not even conservative!--who have been involved in this mess in some way or another.

Hmm, how can I put this to best avoid a 3-page tirade. I tried to read you full explanation detholl, but to be honest, you lost me around the whole freddie mac/ACORN.
The reason everyone is calling you a republican is because your acting like one now. It will always be the same no matter who you talk to, Republicans will freak out and cry "End of the World!" whenever a democrat is elected as president. Also, Democrats will freak out and cry "OMG the country's gone retarded" every time a republican is elected (see election 2004). Sadly, the actual abilities of the new presidential-elect has nothing to do with it.
Everyone decides who they want to vote for at the very beginning, then finds their "information" after the fact. Then everyone gets 2 years to slowly build up a blind fan-boyish loyalty for their candidate, and start developing prejudice and conspiracy theories towards the other. In the end everyone ends up seeing the election as shiny golden diety vs. monkey flinging poo. And really, who would be okay with a monkey that flings poo.? (remember that I'm still referring to both sides viewpoints, not just one. And I know you are all imagining the opposing candidate as a monkey right now. Stop it.)
But the fact of the matter is, Obama won. I woke up this morning and the world did not end. I did not see any news this morning about companies preemptively firing its employees to make up for tax loss.(And for the love of all that is good, can people please remember that the tax in question is an income tax, that affects people, not businesses.) I also doubt that any of the above will happen when Obama is sworn in. Now please, can you stop freaking out and see Obama as what he is, just another human being w/ a brain (albeit a good one) who is going to try his best while he's in office, just like McCain would have. He's not out to cover the world in shit. (damndable monkeys... >:( )

Maybe I'm broken somehow, maybe it's normal to accept the fact that a bunch of politicians should have a large degree of control over my life. Maybe I'm the anomaly here. The more people I talk to, the more I start to believe that my unwillingness to relinquish control of my fate is an aberration.
Maybe I'm just weird because I can honestly say that I've never taken a penny of government assistance, that I'm capable enough to stand on my own two feet, even through hard times, lost jobs, homelessness.
... maybe I'm just stupid because I don't make use of the system I have no choice but to pay into?
Maybe I should just start having kids left and right, maybe I should act up and lose my job, maybe I should buy a house on an adjustable-rate mortgage I can't afford. Maybe I should just sit back and let the government take care of me.
The system is broken because it rewards failure and punishes success.

Oh christ, am I going to have to go through this again with another ignorant fuck?
Your chump of a friend working in the retail side of Countrywide knows about as much about this crisis as the losers at McDonalds know about cattle ranching. You want to know what
my source is?
MEI've spent the past 7 years working in the mortgage backed securities industry.
When I tell you, or dethtoll, that you're wrong, listen to me, because
I know more about this than you do. For the deals I worked on, I was the lawyer drafting all of the agreements whereby the big banks bought those piles of loans from mortgage originators, and then sold them to investors as securities. I've lived this stuff in ways that you couldn't imagine, and I am POSITIVE that it was at far higher levels than any of your "sources."
You are wrong.----------------
And my statement about avoiding "the pundit class" isn't leftist, you dumb fuck. Avoiding biased sources is good advice for both sides.
However, If you start spouting about Acorn and the CRA, the information no doubt HAS come from a biased source attempting to spin reality. How am I positive? Because I know better. I know the laws and regulations that govern Fannie/Freddie. I know the kinds of banks and other businesses that were writing what kinds of loans - I had to, it was my business to.
And because I know all of this, i know that that story is a lie, and the only people repeating that lie are those that either have a vested interest in it, or are too dumb to know better.

To Scots: meh, I think we got at least 2 more president's before that happens.
To flower: So, basically grab whats yours and let the rest of the world burn around you, eh?
So much for using "monkey with poo" to break the dramatic feel of this thread. We need some drugs and booze in here, stat! (i'll be the designated driver though, i can't stand beer. An my car has only 2 decent seats, so the rest of you will have to call for a taxi)

With a simplistic analogy like this it HAS to be true. This is almost as fun as comparing welfare and the plight of the poor to "you can lead a horse to water...".

Statements that dumb deserve their own post, not just to be tacked on as an afterthought to a only slightly less stupid post. Its like "Well let me make an ass of myself, and oh I almost forgot some even more inane bullshit, wouldn't want to deny the fine posters of TTLG this comedy goldmine."

Lancer you're a moron. I never said the world would end. All I said was that taxes would go up and people will lose their jobs. That's a far cry from mass flooding, viral outbreak, nuclear warfare, burning meteoric destruction, zombie rampage, the coming of the great white hankerchief, et cetera. Don't put words in my mouth.
I'm not even going to dignify BEAR's tantrum with a response.

Too late.
Also, you don't think me calling you out for misrepresenting Obama's "stated intent" is valid?
He absolutely has not been running on such a platform. Perhaps some of his policies
will effectively do that, but income tax can already be construed as that.
I wasn't meaning to be a total dick, but I cant help but be bemused that you could vote for Kerry and not Obama, it just confuses the shit out of me (although I think I'm coming closer to understanding you).
