I enjoyed Oblivion so much and for so long that I just assumed most RPG'ers did. So I was puzzled by this love/hate Oblivion thing. One person actually finds nothing in it while another can find so much. I googled for a poll:
(

Seems to be roughly 36% thought it bad and 64% thought it good out of a sample of 220.
Strange black and white poll actually. Why didn't they ask for a score out of 5 or trash/soso/good/excellent/perfect? That might show that 90% got something out of it at least.
Maybe it's the expectation/disappointment thing for those who played all the ES games. As a Thiefer I was disappointed in Thief Deadly Shadows. Lack of many of the earlier Thief features and magic but it was still a decent game.
I have no expectations for T4 so maybe we should have the same for ESV.

Like Fidcal, I enjoyed Oblivion tremendously and wasn't aware there were a lot of Oblivion haters out there. Oh well; different strokes & all that. I also liked Morrowind, but think I rather blasted through it because at the time I played Mw, Oblivion had already been released & I was in a mad rush to play that sequel. In fact, I liked Oblivion so much that I downloaded just about every quest mod I could find, then became immersed in the TES Construction set for months on end, creating a gazillion homes, castles, etc. and loved every minute of it. (I'd need a computer powerful enough to run a small airport if I wanted to load all my personal mods at the same time. :o )
So yeah, I am most definitely looking forward to Skyrim.

Well, there are alot of people around
The first group played morrowind, got very used to it, and felt a bit underwhelmed by the removed features, less unique world and the widely agreed to be broken progression-system.
The other group enjoy the accessibility in oblivion, since morrowind is a pretty harsh game compared to oblivion, and enjoy the more relaxing sandboxy style it has, oblivion finally became the first truly accessible elder scrolls game, much like how minecraft is an accessible dwarf fortress style game.
The third group has never heard of the rest of the series and oblivion is what they have as their first elder scrolls game, I can't think of a better case of "ignorance is bliss", since on it's own its a good game, just not the best in the series.

And there's another group that feels that Oblivion was just a pretty-yet-soulless fantasy stereotype with nice scenery and nothing much else going for it. Hell, the gameplay was even more broken than it was in Morrowind.
Morrowind did have unique art direction, but it was still hilariously easy to break as a game; Oblivion actually added a few new fuck-ups like monster and loot tied to your character's level.
Oblivion's only redeeming feature apart from the random sweeping hillside views (albeit with horrific tiled distant textures) was the Dark Brotherhood quest line.

There's another group who thought all of the Elder Scrolls games were great and are looking forward to the 5th. I'd be willing to speculate that they make up a larger share of the people who read the ES forums here than is immediately obvious, as well.

Oh, I'm sure there is. Plenty of groups all over the place, y'know.

Both of those are definitely fake.

I am just really excited that it is a direct sequel to Oblivion. Awesome!
