I think I'd even place T2X well above T2.
But, like I've said before, TDS was my introduction to Thief, and I loved it at the time because it was something different than pretty much any other game out there that I had played. You had to sneak around...be sneaky...and got to be a "bad guy" instead of a shoot 'em all hero. It was the style of gameplay that hooked me and fascinated me. So, when I finally played T1 it, at first, seemed seriously flawed--though I realized that it was because I had been jaded by the more polished and flashier TDS. It was only afterwards that came to appreciate what it offered for a game made in 1999 and how much of a classic it truly is.
But, if T1 hadn't of had the same premiss and style as what I had come to expect from playing TDS, I would have hated it.

I'd place TDS above T2, if nowhere near the league of T1. I find T2 incredibly dry/bland aside from 2-3 missions, though.

You know, all this bad news we've been getting about this game recently has put a big dent in my normally unerringly optimistic outlook.

That's certainly a differing opinion to what is normally said here. What missions were the few you did like in Thief 2? May I ask what things made T1 and TDS better for you?

Definitely a cluster F, Renzatic. And probably one that's been made worse by the drive to create "a blockbuster AAA title hit" (whatever) instead of just making a game and pursuing an audience for that game.

At least it can't get much worse now.

In fact, a follow-on announcement that Stephane Roy has left the production might even signal an upturn.
One can hope, eh?

It is funny that this is just getting attention now, when David Anfossi actually took over the studio (

I have no love for D'Astous, but I would have respect for someone who doesn't buckle and quit because they suddenly feel like a redheaded stepchild. Seriously--grow a pair.
C'mon man, you're just going to make a huge judgement like that based on a 2 paragraph press release? You have no idea what's really going on behind the scenes there.
That said, I'm not sure criticizing your former employer first chance you get is the greatest career move if you hope to stay in the same industry. That part's a little surprising.
Edit: Oh, and I think anyone who says TDS is better than T2 needs to seriously go back and replay T2 again. I'm not a TDS hater at all, but there's really no comparison. And placing T2X above T2? Love T2X, but its' still just a really long fan mission. T2X was born from T2, and especially without Garrett, I don't know how you can say it's better.

Well, he was the founder of the company, after all, so there was probably some bitterness involved.

Yeah, this is fairly old news.
I don't think there's much you can say about what this will do for thief, as ultimately we don't know the situation inside EM and Square, and we don't know what parties are pushing what agendas within the two companies.
Queue, you also can't say anything for certain about Stephane based on this ... you have no idea what he has or hasn't been doing over the past few years.
Brethren, I also prefer T3 to T2, and I think I've played both more then enough to make the comparison. I imagine Jason has too. It's not a hard argument to make, depending on your personal preferences. There's the fact that T2 is basically a glorified mission pack (which you may or may not care about), T2's story and atmosphere (which you may or may not prefer), plus all the other differences between T1/2 and T3 (which you can have differing opinions of). With all the factors in play, there's plenty of room for differing valid opinions.
