I found this video about the efficacy rates of Covid vaccines really enlightening.
tl;dw: The efficacy rates of vaccines result from trial studies that are not comparable. Moderna and Pfizer were tested in the US during the summer, when infection rates were low. Johnson & Johnson was tested in Brazil and South Africa during the fall-winter peak with different virus strains. Even though more people did get infected in the Johnson & Johnson study, no one who was vaccinated with any of these 3 vaccines died or even went to hospital.

Very interesting, especially given the current furore/panic around the AstraZeneca vaccine (of which I've had my first dose in the UK) and blood clots going on in Europe. Seems like a certain amount of bad press combined with vaccine politics might harm the overall programme in Europe which is already somewhat behind. Even in the UK, the perception that Pfizer is "better" is widespread. Possibly doesn't help that the availability of AstraZeneca here is so much greater, I think many people feel like it's the bargain one we have a surplus of. Anyway I was happy to receive my jab and despite feeling a bit bad the following day, no other ill effects!

From here on, anyone who suffers any kind of unexpected ailment will blame it on the vaccine.
I know I'm exaggerating, but battling the anti-vaxxers is going to be worse than battling the COVID deniers last year.
My bigger concern is that opposition to the SARS-CoV-2 vaccine is going to spill over and bring down vaccination rates in general. Before the pandemic, the anti-vax movement was small: mostly orthodox Jews and a few smaller religious sects, and Jenny McCarthy moms. But it was enough to bring measles outbreaks back. Imagine if a third or more of your population opts out of all vaccination. Here in the US, it's not hard to imagine.

One in ten chance of life altering outcome from Covid infection = "SPRING BREAK DUUUUUUDES!!!!"
One in ten-million chance of life altering outcome from vaccine reaction = "They're trying to kill us!!! Don't wear a face diaper!!"
