Just curious, has anyone ever messed around in UW with a hex editor or anything? I read in a FAQ that the author edited his Attack and Defense skills to 250 in order to kill the Slasher of Veils.
Switching the .dat files between save games, I can start off at level 16 or amass an infinite stockpile of fireball wands, but I can't exceed the normal limit on ability scores. BTW, anyone know what's in BGLOBALS.DAT?

Personally i'd LOVE to hack my own maps for UW, but.. Sadly there are no editors, and it would take far too long otherwise. Oh and I'm not totally sure what's in that file.. sounds as if it has to do with certain mapping or something.

If you wan't to have some fun maxing out your stats, try either the UW1 editor or the UW2 editor, both available at the Stygian Abyss in the Deco Morono section. Several months ago I finally decided to try out the Superchar savegames for both underworld games, and was amazed at some of the goodies that you start off with. These include alot of items that weren't used in the game, but still exist in the dat files. Both of these are available at the Stygian Abyss.

It's the same one meantioned in Vividos's UW specification document, but that link is now out of date.
You can find it on (
http://bearcity.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk) although be warned that it is not exactly a highly polished piece of software. Still, it's okay for playing about with and you can modify the terrain and objects.

Wow, thanks for the links. I hadn't noticed those player hacks Twisty pointed out, just the super characters.
The funny thing is, I actually recall some of the stranger objects in the UW inventory editor from years ago when I hadn't beaten the game. Something that looked like a cartoon explosion called "Damage" appeared once. Another time, when the inventory bug had ruined my game, I remember seeing the word "SPEL".. when you used it the cursor turned into a blue cross.. it all makes sense now.
Interesting document for an Underworld fanatic like me, Vividos. I'll have to try out that level editor as well.

Wow, Thanks a lot Al_B!
And what do you mean not high polished? I find it pretty neat!
Do you plan to continue work on it? It appears you've done a lot so far..
Anyways, again thanks, it's a lot of fun!

I mean that it's rather quirky in it's operation and hasn't exactly got a consistent and structured user interface. It was created because I was facinated with the Underworlds and wanted to examine the maps. In particular, I wanted to prove to myself that there was no Lotus Turbo Esprit in Andunos (unless it's created by the software).

I may do. At the moment I'm fairly busy with getting married in a few weeks and for some reason my other half seems to think that organising caterers, dresses, guests and accomodation is more important than working on software for fun...
I might put the source code on the same website as the editor so others can play around with it if they want.

Hmm.. Yes, getting married does seem far more important. ;)
As I said, it's not as bad as you were letting on.. The interface is pretty simple really.
Should you decide to continue it i'm sure you'd make a lot of people happy.
But right now.. Worry more about keeping yourself happy!

I did some hex-editing a few years ago, but never figured how those stats really worked. They were pretty well hidden, but I did manage to find 'em, despite being kind of a newbie. The Editor is of course a lot better alternative, and also explains why I got different stats for every skill I edited manually. I also remember some sort of inventory editor, that allowed things like cap of sunlight and etc. (This was not the super character, I haven't been able to find this editor anywhere)
