Sounds like a bad idea to me.
I'm always making corrections to my old posts when I notice a mistake in them while searching for something.
The threads in question are usually not particularly constructive in any case and, while deleting the first post is annoying, it's probably no real loss.
Keeping backups of every edit would be extremely impractical - it would probably increase the size of the forums by 20-40% if left long enough...
Only allowing a user to reduce the length of their post by 50% might be a solution, though people could just halve their post repeatedly until there's nothing left... or fill it with "-Deleted-Deleted-Deleted-".
No, I'd say "leave it alone."
