I joined House Telvanni after I was made Arch-Mage in the Mage's Guild.
When I spoke with the guy that accepted me into the house, I only had a rating of 5 for persuasion.
After I joined, my persuasion rating went immediately to 89. I guess they don't take it too hard.
However, I've been hearing stuff that some of the quests for the Telvanni can get you pretty much kicked out of the Mage's Guild. I really don't know what to say about that. Could just be a rumor. Have to keep reading.

You could probably avoid being kicked out through having a high sneak/security skill and good speechcraft to taunt people into attacking you. But I don't know if any of the quests could get you kicked out either
