Saw this on Voodoo Extreme which had a bit of a PCGamer preview on BioShock ((

July 29, 2006 - In the Sept. edition of PC Gamer (US), there's an 8-page cover story about BioShock. Included in the write-up is an interview with Ken Levine, who shares how EA felt about the idea of making System Shock 3 (as BioShock is the "spiritual successor to SS2):
Was there an effort to get the System Shock license?
One of the reasons I wasn't interested [in System Shock 3] is EA just didn't give a sh*t about that game. We have a publisher who cares about this game, and they believe in this kind of game. 2K Games is the company that helped reinvigorate Elder Scrolls [with The Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion] and Civilization. They believe in core games. I think if EA were to do it, it would've been just a regular first-person shooter with a boss monster at the end. They just weren't interested. I did a story design for System Shock 3, and they had it, and they didn't give a sh*t. It's just not their thing. They didn't see it as big brand and I didn't want that uphill battle.

I would LOVE to get a look at that story design...

Well, I do think EA should care more about the games industry's creative progress and focus even more on games that aren't all about making cash safely (such as its franchises and sequels).
The business is not primarily about making money. Money is overrated. :ebil: Just my 2 cents.

Well, if EA don't care, it is just their loss of a possible record-selling game. ;)

Why can't we get the SS3 IP back from EA? I mean, if they're just buying it up and stonewalling, wtf?

I doubt EA will ever make SS3. It's wayyy too dangerous for them.
The problem is that a game like SS1/2/3 is a grower. You won't get the millions of copies sold on the first day, like you get with Madden and the other sporting titles. Hell the sports titles are a piece of cake, they just update the stats and bingo a new revenue stream!!!
The SS series has always been for the more thoughtfull gamer. The interfaces and ideas make the player "Work" to play the game well. It means that the game is not in the top of everyones list.
The problem is that with quite a lot of game companies reporting losses, if a game does not sell big, fast. It won't get made.
Also, imagine if they did an SS3 but did it badly... How many people would be moaning and shouting. While EA couldn't care about us, if they get too much bad publicity it WILL hurt their bottom line. SS3 would have to be increadible to match the feeling that SS2 generated.
SS3 would be too big a gamble and while they can make money off idiots buying games where they only changes are the names on the kit! then we will never see an SS3

In that case, we should try our best to get EA to make SS3, the worse rep they get, the better.

Heh, let them screw themselves over with a less important title ;) Have you played Ultima Online anytime recently? I wish it was more popular just so EA would get more bad rep. People have been quitting the game left & right because of how bad EA treats the game. I'm personally amazed the game is still even running, actually.
