Thanks for replying.

Understood. But I think we'd have received the same level of heat from the hardcore crowd if we'd gone that way as well.

I don't think most people are against the idea of hands. It's just that they're too prominent when they aren't being used to interact with something. Those hands when Garrett is crouched need to be moved toward the lower corners of the screen.
They just need to be lowered entirely off the screen when not in use. There's no functional or aesthetic reason to keep them up the whole time. They should just auto-drop entirely off the screen after not using them for anything for more than like 2 seconds, if they even need to be up when idle at all (which, I'd argue there's no need). And even when they are idly up, I don't need the whole hands showing. I'm human with a memory and can remember what I have or don't have equipped. Seeing just the knuckles or fingertips if need be would be more than enough visual indicator.
So focus groups and E3 players don't mention them being annoying, but has anyone actually played Thief and said they love the perpetual Zombie/T-rex hands? They annoy me every time I play a game with them (Bioshock, Skyrim, Dishonored). I have friends who almost entirely play 3rd person games who will never play Thief because they hate T-rex hands in 1st person games, they make fun of them, and have seen they'll be in Thief. I was hoping to get them on the Thief bandwagon but those hopes are pretty much dashed all because of the hands (well, and the silly showing of combat AI and other things seen at E3). Heck, I prefer 1st person games and they even bother me, in case that part wasn't clear yet ;)
I just roll my eyes and think, "Great. Another game with the stupid hands always visible." I mean who walks and creeps around like that. Not only that, but at some point, a normal person would lower their arms to give then a rest. And they should auto-drop; I shouldn't have to press a button to put my hands away like they're a sword that needs sheathing.
I just don't get it. Sounds like I need yet one more menu option; this one to specify that I want my hands to politely go away when not in use. Can't believe I have to actually request that. Where are the user experience and user interface experts in game-making? Then again, those folks sometimes have Ph.Ds and, I hate to say it, sometimes seem pretty disconnected from common sense, imo. I've seen my share of good ones, but also a fair share of not-so-good ones. Maybe some people love PerpetuaHands, but I will never understand.

There is just too much bad water at this point and EM won't be earning back my purchase. They've gone to great lengths to please people who have probably never heard of Thief. People who wouldn't know a Hammerite from a stalactite. We're supposed to be excited by a game that has a threadbare connection to the one we've worked hard to keep alive all these years. I think they underestimated the community and it's love of the game's history and our love of Stephen Russell. Without him voicing Garrett, I wish they had created a new character and just been done with it.
That's where I am, too. I decided a couple of weeks ago that I'm not buying the new game. Even if they get the mechanics good enough that I wouldn't mind that aspect of the game, they've gutted the rest of what makes Thief Thief so badly that little shout-outs referencing the original games will be nothing but disappointing reminders of what the new game should have been. I don't want to play through that.
At that time, I also decided I was going to stop even discussing the new game. The more I comment on the game the more irritated I get. I backslid today, but I'm checking out again now. I'll leave you guys to it. You're saying most of the same things I'd be saying anyway.

I'm really glad we have The Dark Mod, T2X, and FM's, not to mention the previous 3 games. Seriously. No mater what happens with the future of this franchise, this series has provided more enjoyment than any other game. Thief epitomizes the standard for which I judge all other games in terms of quality, immersion, and just damn fun gameplay.

We certainly haven't shared everything at this stage.
There's one more thing that interests many of us here.
Swimmable water. Yes or no? Can you answer at this stage? It's obvious that the level design work should be done with swimmable water (or the lack of it) in mind, so it's probably decided at this time.
As for the zombie hands... I do think that most of us would enjoy some kind of body awareness (eg. Garrett's hands visible while leaning, opening the doors, climbing etc.) in the game. What bugs us is the fact that Garrett's hands are always "on" while he's
crouching. We are against, as ZylonBane said, "the stealth zombie hands". Just get rid of
these hands, improve (eg. opening the doors) or add (eg. pickpocketing) some other animations and it's going to be great! :)

Hey everyone, I was one of the people EM sent over to E3 to play Thief. I'm answering questions over on the official forums as you probably already know, but I thought I'd branch out here for some discussions too. If you have any specific questions about the game then I'll answer them (

I can vouch for the team members I met having bucket loads of common sense. ;)
Totally understand the T-Rex arms worry, but when I played, it felt natural to me: it was just like Garrett was poised to use his hands at a moments notice. Itchy Thief fingers.

I suggest you ask Adam to work on releasing some more content. Piccies are always good. Moving ones even more so. Why not share 'the painting moment'?

Perhaps, but I seriously doubt it would have garnered the same level of anger and resentment recasting Garrett has caused. They really underestimate how important Stephen is to the character...and the series in general, at least to the fans that they claim to be listening to. Stephen as Garrett was one of our big ones.

I think that what Jay meant was "moving picture" with this famous painting moment. ;)

One of the most important things that prevents me from posting more often there is this black and white layout. It makes reading rather painful. :(
