Word, Renz. Both Aja and Subjective's posts have vibes that are alien to me.

Right. It doesn't make any sense to me. I could meet the perfect woman personalitywise, and my opinion of her wouldn't change simply because she likes Harlequin romance novels and V.C Andrews. Sure, I won't be getting into any deep discussions over books with her, but there's so much more to a relationship than what we both happen to read.
Hell, my best and longest relationship was with a girl I shared practically nothing in common with as far as books, movies, and music were concerned. Didn't really matter much in the end.

Weirdly enough, my wife and I appeared to share nothing in common regarding music/book/movie tastes when we first got together. But over time we've discovered that we really enjoy a surprising amount of each other's collections.
Not that I'm going to admit to liking some of those albums, mind. :grr:
Scots, I wish I had something to tell you about e-readers ... I feel like I should: I used one for a little while, but mostly to read papers in pdf format, rather then books. It wasn't especially well suited to the task, but I mangled the pdfs until they were more-or-less readable. Eventually I fell flat on my back, damaged the lower portion of the screen, and haven't used it since.

you guys really think common interests aren't important? The nice girl I'm getting along with tells me she's into Hemingway and I am suddenly doubly interested/aroused.
(this is a hypothetical situation)
But anyway for me it's also about collecting. I'd be perfectly content if all the movies and games I own were only stored digitally, but books and music I find satisfying to amass. An ideal situation for me would be if physical books came with digital copies, like records sometimes do. Because I can obviously see the value in an e-reader (as in an mp3 player), but real books are still fun to have.

Common interests are important, however those don't extend to the level of scoffing at someone and dismissing them outright due to their not living a book or movie I particularly enjoy nor judging who they are a person by what they read.
Someone can watch movies for entertainment or as sustained intellectual explorations... that doesn't mean those two people can't watch and enjoy the same movie, they can but they probably aren't going to debate the finer points of it in the way that would satisfy one of those parties.
