Yeah the urban exploration aspect is great. One of the best things about the game is standing in front of a big building and wondering "how am I supposed to get up there?" then looking for climbing routes. Later game upgrades like the hangglider and grappling hook nerfs this challenge, which is why I'm fine with the game waiting to dole those out.

That's mainly why I wasn't a huge fan of the grappling hook in the first game. At least the grappling hook in the second game seems to be more physics-based; I don't remember being able to swing in the first game.

No idea where the fun is supposed to be to shred through hordes of always re-spawning enemies.
I mean, it's a game about a zombie apocalypse. Not sure what you were expecting there.
chk772 on 14/2/2022 at 20:33
I didn't know that zombies randomly arise from the ground. ;)
It's no fun either, when you're up to exploring the game world. Not to mention that it doesn't give you any sense of achievement of having swept an area. Well, it's obviously not what the kids want these days. They want non stop, never ending action and never ending re-spawns. Regardless of how little sense that makes.

Dead Island had respawning zombies too.
Not sure why you keep giving older games a pass for things that annoy you with newer games. (no, Deathloop wasn't any more of a "shooter" than Prey was either, they both let you play it as stealthy as you please) Maybe it's not the games that changed, but you?

Oh, don't be too hard on Socrates. If he doesn't tell the kids to get off his lawn with their respawning enemies and... and... and *colours*, who will?
Renault on 15/2/2022 at 15:51
Criticizing respawning enemies is kind of bizarre. I mean, every single open world game does this, not just the zombie ones. Imagine playing Skyrim and walking 15 minutes from one town to another, and there's absolutely no AI to get in your way because you've already "cleared the area" on one of your previous sessions. Man that sure sounds like fun!
And yeah, the "games these days" comments are getting really old.

The re-spawning is a little janky though.
I'm OK with re-spawning if it happens either off-screen or in a way that suits the logic of the game.
I was caught in the middle of a re-spawn in DL2 where they just erupted out of the ground like an arcade game.
It was jarring to the point where I wondered if it was maybe a bug (maybe it is?).
I did have a bit of an annoying bug while searching a military convoy, whereby pinging my survivor sense somehow caused a gas canister to explode, and alerted every zombie within a block to swarm to my location.
I'm sticking with it for now, mainly because I finally got a new(ish) GPU (RTX2060 6gb) and it looks pretty. I'm hoping it gets more fun as I get to better grips with the various mechanics (still not figured out the best way to move around at night and get into the places with good loot without alerting all the assholes).

Yes, there is a difference between respawning enemies, and enemies which respawn, when you just turned your back on the ones you killed. Dying Light 1 had the latter. No fun if you like to explore the game world.
Dead Island is already borderline (and sometimes above...) in that regard, but, it's not as severe as in Dying Light.
Well... I don't blame them. If they don't do it, then the ADHD kids will scream "BOOOORING!!" if they can't hack one zombie per second to pieces.

Funny, because, going back, I still play and like the same games I played 20 years ago. Maybe I didn't change, but the target audience did? I wasn't like my parents either when I was 20, you know?
Would be no problem anyway, if all games and films wouldn't be turning into something so breathtakingly stupid these days though. And, if people would actually realize that the stuff has changed, and that respawning enemies in the game world after a while isn't the same as respawning every 5 seconds. AND, if people would actually realize how stupid and unrealistic that is. Or how unrealistic and stupid that parcours stuff is.

You seem to have a massive axe to grind.
Recommend 2-handing it.
