I figure it's probably a little earlier for this, but I'm very curious on how DX2 is selling in the XBOX (and PC) market so far. I'm thinking someone in here might have access to this info
(the lil research I've done leads me to believe you have to be in the biz to get the info) and it would be interesting to see if the XBOX'ers are purchasing it.
*Disclaimer * I haven't play the game or the demo yet...I'm waiting for the patch;)
But based on some of the reviews and other posts - they might have some problem initially
(if the buyer does some checking before buying) selling in the PC market due to some bugs and tweaking that needs to be done. Although, on the other side of the argument, there has also been some good reviews as well.
This is not a flame ION post though - I'm just very curious from the market side of the business to find out how DX2 is doing....
The 2 sites I've found so far:
(
http://www.gamemarketwatch.com/)
and
(
http://www.npd.com/)
which a lot of other sites quote for research and/or results but is subscription only from what I can tell.....
Anyone that can supply some insight or info - it would be appreciated.

Well, I see Gamespot posting the weekly NPD figures, but the latest ones posted are from the end of November.

2 / Call of Duty / Activision / $37
3 / The Sims Double Deluxe / EA / $38
4 / Zoo Tycoon: Complete Collection / Microsoft / $29
5 / The Sims: Superstar Expansion Pack* / EA / $28

7 / Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic / LucasArts / $48
8 / Age of Mythology / Microsoft / $34

I'm now wondering if the XBOX is not selling as well as they thought it would and thus, got the patch to the PC out quick?
They could have of course just generated a patch because it was the right thing to do and they wanted us to have the best game we could play and I personally believe that is probably the major reason here. Once again - this is by no means a personal attack on ION, I'm just curious.
But, I can't help but think about the marketing side of this - that the major push was for XBOX (if this is a fair assesment on my part) sales first and then PC sales.
The reason I'm curious is because Microsoft is throwing money at a lot of developers to go the console way (it was report by ID that Microsoft threw a couple million $s at John Carmack to release Doom 3 on XBOX first and he told them to hit the road) and I wonder if a PC game like DX takes a bigger chance of trying to focus at this console market at the risk of alienating the PC market.
p.s. Has anyone seen any #s or information yet to enlighten us on how DX is doing in the PC and/or XBOX markets or is it still too early?

The reason for this is that the majority of games do not sell very well at all; in the UK at least, outside the major chart entries (football games, basically) national sales in the hundreds are not uncommon, and some games stuggle to make even this, which can be a terrible embarassment for producers and retailers alike. Box office figures for films are widely available and can be quite distressing at the lower end of the market; Empire magazine used to print the yearly figures, and the least successful films might only make a few hundred pounds.
The PC market in general is diminishing in the UK, the relative importance of the XBox and PC versions of DE:IW being a good example of this; perhaps one day shops will sell 'XBox PCs', bundled with keyboards, mice and so forth, at which point (a) no-one will need to buy a PC and (b) Microsoft will own the world, and it will be a better world.

I've been thinking about the XBox and everything recently, what with the DX2 furore and its implications for Thief. As I was reading yet another MS legal chicanery/security disaster/morally reprehensible story the other day, I considered for the umpteenth time the feasibility of my moving to Linux. Getting right down to it, there's only 3 things I do with my PC: a little work (spreadsheet/word processing), internet (mail, surf, chat) and gaming. In reality then, only gaming keeps Windows on my machine.
If the XBox continues to take over the ever-diminishing PC games market, it may get to the point where my only reason to stick with Windows vanishes. I'm sure I'm not the only one in this position. The question is whether I'll buy an XBox to play all the great new games, or desert gaming altogether because all that's coming out is consolised mainstream junk (with no mouse support).
Err, that was a bit off topic, sorry. :erm:

True oRGy (and thanks for the link), but there are simply too many games that don't at present. Again if the number of new PC releases tail off then it may be a feasible solution, but emulators will always be playing catchup with the latest and greatest. I could always dual boot too, but that defeats the purpose.

This is the latest info I could find - hopefully someone can confirm that these are right...

Don't worry M$ will own linux in a couple of years and then your decision will be a lot easier. You'll also need windows media player with drm to watch any video off the net or to watch a dvd you just bought.
