I suspect that is highly unlikely to be correct; the optic nerve almost certainly only supports the normal existing level of perception, short of growing a larger one (a possibility). You'd have to tap all the way to the brain, at which point making it "optic" may be unnecessary (but perhaps convenient?).

The optic nerve pretty much is brain tissue. It's amazing stuff.
