I've just freed the pilot/chopper from the WTO terminal. This is about the point in most games where I either decide to finish it, or scrap it, and I'm leaning heavily toward scraping it. I didn't play it or read much about it when it was released, so I'm not sure what the general opinion of this game is around here. I loved the original, but I have to ask a few questions:
1) Does the plot become anymore coherent? I have no idea where I am or why I'm doing anything beyond the next tedious task. I don't understand who the character is, what he does/did, who he works for or what they do (other than he's an 'agent' WTF?). I've got (literally) 8 different goals right now from 5 different people. I understand that DX prides itself on open gameplay, but there has been little to no information for me to base decisions on.
2) Does it get any less stupid? Everytime I cross the WTO, some woman (I have no idea who) pops into my head and says, "I'm very angry that you just blew up my house, raped my mother, and killed all my children, BUT I'M WILLING TO FORGIVE YOU IF YOU'LL JUST DO X." Um...huh? Is there a more idiotic way to lay out mission goals? No. No there's not. I've also been preached at and hit on by a gay guy within the last hour. This is fun? Again - no. No it's not. Hey Ion Storm - it's not funny either. You're not clever. It's ass.
3) Does it open up at all? Currently the level sizes make Deadly Shadows look like the open skies of Montana. How is it exactly that the Training Facility, Night Club, Elevator (Inclinator? How fucking stupid can you get? Look guys! It's not an elevator or an escalator! It's an Inclinator!!LOLZ), WTO headquarters, and godknows what else, are all crammed into the same 2-block wide mini-mall? Ok, I'll admit that the UNATCO headquarters inside the Statue of Liberty's big toe in DX 1 was a little far fetched, but I can't fart without hitting a loading zone. I've literally finished reading Schrodinger's Cat part 1 during load screens since I started this game (I shit you not, it's on the desk in front of me right now).
4) Will there be more than 3 NPC's as the game progresses? I found it odd that the WTO chairman/president/whateverhewas hired me to steal something from the club owner that was either his clone, twin brother, or himself using some type of teleporter I haven't discovered yet. The creepy gay guy at the bar has me set him up with...himself? Or his twin. Either way, how hard is it to come up with a few more NPC skins? T2X did something around 30-40 for our mod, and nobody paid $40 for it. I feel robbed. Oh yeah - the rednecks trying to talk ghetto are also ass, and also get old when they're plopped down on every corner. Who thought this was a good idea?
5) Does the main character get any more compelling? I know - J.C. Denton was a robot, but this guy has the personality of J.C.'s left sock. Not the sweaty one he's wearing right now - the clean one folded nicely in his closet at home.
Ok, done ranting. I'd really like to finish it but I'm struggling to stay interested, and I'm definitely not immersed. Maybe this is stuff you all discussed 3 years ago. I just can't believe how dismally bad this is so far compared to DX 1. :(

You get used to it... It's not that bad, but it's far from great. I say you finish it, as it reveals some interesting things. Oh, and have you met NG Resonance yet (In person)? God, what a B****!
Well, that's my 2 cents,

It gets better only in the sense that you eventually realize you're actually playing Monty Python's Deus Ex.
It is a silly place.

1) Yes, the plot will become more coherent. There is no introduction with Invisible War, so the beginning is a bit rough the first time you play it. (As if you will be masochist enough to play IW more than once...)
2) No, you will always have explicit hand holding and your "choices" won't have any consequences. Also, if you can't stand NPC that does not conform to your moral standard (like the gay guy), then this game may not be for you.
3) No, most levels will always be extremely small and you'll have a lot of loading zone. Some level will feel a bit more open though.
4) The look and style of NPC will be about the same for the whole game. You'll have some new models a bit later, but it will always feel cheap. You'll get use to it though.
5) Play with the female Alex. More tolerable.
The next level (Mako) is shorter but not as bad, after that, you'll get the worst of all (Cairo), then, overall, it will get a bit better. Of course, this is my personal taste, so you may feel differently.
Edit : BTW, DaveW is now on the Deus Ex 3 forum... ;)

What? Does DaveW fiercely love IW or something and go into flame mode when it's criticised?

Yeah, the only saving grace I could possibly offer you is the fact that you can kill almost every major character.
