I loved DX, played it about a hundred times or so, and i swore to buy the sequel at some time or another, because it surely wouldn't have worked on the PC I had by then.
Now, just recently, I bought a new one. First thing yesterday I went to my games store and bought the shipped US version, installed it without problems, patched it to v1.2. It started without problems.
But then the shock: The graphics are ridiculous! I don't want to show off, but I have now got a AMD 64 3GHz, 1 GB RAM, a Radeon 9600XT with 256 MB RAM aso. I have to resort to 800x600 as resolution because otherwise, the game is unplayable. I also have to decrease the quality of shadows, lighting and character details, have to disable all options I can get hold of - and it still doesn't work smoothly, in addition to looking far worse than DX1.
Apart from that: Call me conservative, but one of the things I admired most about DX1 was the great ingame menu that allowed you to play exactely the way you wanted to. Then, IMO, the graphics were more realistic, not the bonbon style of DX2 (similar to Q3A). Everybody's still going on about the stealh possibilities, but I was a stealth player in DX1, and it's vitually impossible to play DX2 this way. The items were more easily recognisable, interaction with NPCs worked way better .. where's the character development gone to, anyway?
Well, DX2 is just a big disappointment to me. It looks like some cheap shooter, like Sin or something. Or like a console game. Is there anything I can do to improve performance on my machine, install new drivers, perhaps, or something? And did I do anything wrong in playing? Or did I expect too much? Hay anyone of you had similar experiences?
I'm kinda desperate at the moment. I just hope Thief 3 will turn out to be better.

I had the luck of not playing Deus Ex 1, so I didn't have to compare IW to it, but I haven't had the slowdown you speak of (Even although for some reason in many areas there's bad problems with people just being sillhouettes up close, which I presumed was my graphics card's fault). Gameplay wise, I managed to play stealth fairly well, but agree that it doesn't seem that the game is meant for a completely stealth game, annoyingly.

Well, I recently picked up IW myself, finished it today and have been wanting to post my toughts. Hope ya don't mind if I tag along on your thread SantaClaws. :)
I found IW(X-Box version) in a bargain-bin and figured I'd check it out. Having heard mostly negative opinions from hardcore DX fans(like myself) and just good reviews from the gamemags/sites I wasn't sure what to expect. Initialy I was kinda dissapointed with the... not so great graphics and the small inventory.
But, as the story progressed a bit I changed my mind about the game pretty quickly. Quite simply, I love it! I does feel like the original DX at times, at other times it feels a lot better. The story is better, there is more freedom of choice and the action is better. Ok, stealth probably isn't as easy as in the first DX game but the shooting-action is just so damn cool!
Ok, so it doesn't play like DX, it's more actiony, but I wouldn't realy want it any other way. And, no, it's not quite as good as the first DX either, but still it's defenitely a... 8.7/10
I like. I will be replaying.

Ha ha, the movie was called "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" and it sucked. Not sure why I brought it up. Hmm. :erg:

Context, ZB, context.
It was lucky for me for playing DX:IW, since it didn't have to compare to the original for me. I still want to play the original some time.

Well, I guess I'll give it another try. Any suggestions as to how I can improve performance?
