That's exactly what DX did.
Yes. It was a great achievment in storytelling by interactive means. I highly appreciate it for what it has done, and that's why it's one of my favourite game. However, it's not without its flaws. So the thing, what i would like to see, is somebody surpassing it and making the next big step. It's high time, DX was released nearly a decade ago.
Quote:
Except for the cutscene at the beginning and at the end, the story was completely interactive. The entire plot was told through newspapers, e-mails, notepads, and conversations with NPC's. The amount of information you gathered depended entirely on your exploration of the world. The game never stopped to tell you "Ok this is the story right here, you're not playing anymore, listen carefully". Even entirely scripted sequences relating to the main plot always acted out as conversations you had to participate in. I really don't see how much more interactive you can get. All you can do is add more choices, consequences and paths for the player. But that just requires time and money. Look at the nameless mod, it may have the most interactive story ever made in a game, but it still doesn't have a consequence for your every action. That's because they only spent 7 years making it and not 20. I really hope the story in DX3 will be delivered in the same manner and that they won't lazily resort to cutscenes. As long as there are a few consequences to my action, and that I don't feel like I'm being spoonfed the story but rather picking up bits and pieces of it here and there as I explore the world, I'll be happy.
No, the story was nearly uninteractive. It was told in an interactive way, that's right, but it wasn't interactive itself. Beware the big words, like 'interactive story'. It's kinda paradox, in fact. Just think about it. Even what 'interactive' means is an object of debate. However, we can say, that in really simplified way it's something like that: we react to something (a game system in our case) and than it reacts to our reaction, we react to that aigan and so on so forth... So, we have an influence on that system. Does we have an influence on the story of Deus Ex. Yes, but really limited, and mainly in the side events (Rentons etc.).
You are right then, interactive narration exists (DX, SShock etc.), but i think that it should be improved. I used wrong words. So, i should correct myself to say: i would like to see the first interactive story. If it is even possible of create some! [I think, theoretically, it is, however it would be really hard job to do it. And i think it's not completly possible to execute it with our actual game systems. I have some critical thoughts about the TNM, but as i did not finished it with either side, i feel no rights to comment on that now.]

Anyway about the whole "will DX3 turn out like IW ?" thing. I've said it already, and I'll say it again, this has happened before. Ken levine himself came here to sell us Bioshock affirming that it would be exactly like System Shock 2 or even better, and that there was no need to worry. Well turns out the final game, while not bad at all, didn't have all that much in common with SS2 (gameplay-wise). So obviously we were all disappointed.
If you believe what was said in the post-mortem, what Ken said could have been true up to a certain point. Of course after this turning point, everything went down the (mass-market) drain.

We really should reproduce then!
(Sorry for the bad taste joke)
Your standards of what constitutes "bad taste" are amusing and quaint.

Well, there is some very strange people on this planet who can take offense of almost anything. I mean if a simple boob seen on TV can make a scandal, I don't want to think about what the idea of suggesting to actually have sex might do!
That and, once, in a discussion with a woman who was complaining there was too many immigrants, I also invited her to reproduce in order to make "our" demographic group bigger than the others (I was obviously implying for her to have sex with me). Let's just say she didn't have the same sense of humor as me.
So now, I do like all lawyers do, I use some fine print to make sure I'm not liable for anything.
