And what's so bad about hugging walls to peek or shoot around corners anyway?
Both the previews linked above made comments to the effect of "I didn't mean to duck behind a certain spot" or "my head popped up out of cover when I didn't mean to." Anytime you're bouncing back and forth between perspectives, bad shit will happen, not to mention that it's just a huge break in immersion. At least one of the articles makes a point of saying how the cover system is core to the way the game is played, so it's likely not "one cheesy gameplay decision."
Gears of War can be fun in it's own way - but that style of game is not what Deus Ex should be.
I also don't get the regen health routine - EM says they don't want us scrounging for health packs because it ruins the flow of the game, so instead they want us cowering in some corner in fear for 30 seconds until our health magically returns? Come on.
And I'm betting that all this talk about multiple paths to victory and alternate strategies is just marketing speak being spoonfed to the previewers. But hey, I hope I'm dead wrong about all of this.

Deus Ex is all about striking your enemies unseen, and rarely ever taking a full frontal assault unless you absolutely have to. To me, a cover system works more in its favor than against it.
Provided it's done well, of course. The idea of a perspective switch does bother me a bit, but if it doesn't bother me while I'm playing the game, then I obviously won't mind it so much.

Yeah, that is a possibility. "Multiple paths to victory" could be nothing more than the occasional vent that leads you on a slight detour down an otherwise linear hallway. That's not infiltration, that's a small excursion on an obstacle course. Give me levels that mimic floor plans from an actual building. Give me multiple entrances and exits to multiple points of said building. Hell, go ahead and give me ductwork. I want to plan a heist, not a play a game that calls shooting a dude with augmentation X or gun Y multiple choice. If I don't have that, then I won't like it. This is what I expect from a game carrying the Deus Ex name.
So I hope you're wrong about that, too.

I disagree, I regard Deus Ex as being all about creating an immersive, believable adventure for the player, one that puts the player right in the protagonist's shoes. For me, a
mandatory, third person cover system is a major blunder, I just hope the rest of the game is up to snuff. As for the reduced role of full frontal assaults in the original game, I was under the impression we were all set on it being a result of a relatively poor implementation of the action component, but that it was supposed to be very much a valid approach to playing the game in the design.

They seem impressed with the game so far. Quite a bit is revealed about the game's first mission. You can get in trouble for loitering around Seraph Industries too long. I'm not sure how I feel about that as I like exploring places fully.

Deus Ex difficulty?
Melan on 16/2/2011 at 08:19
The difficulties are 'Console', 'Bioshock', 'Deus Ex' and 'TTLG'. That's right! :D

I'm playing this day one on TTLG difficulty, at night with my motherfucking sunglasses on.

I'm playing this day one on TTLG difficulty,
Your character flies into a rage when using cover.
You must use keyboard and mouse, even on the console versions.

That's ok. But if the game puts passive aggressive tags on my desktop, I'm blaming you all.
