Simple as that. I've got GOTY version and been very happy with it, but an apartemnt store near here dug up some old cardboard boxed versions, so I was wondering is there really any miniscule reason to get it. Money is not the thing- it's something like 9.95 Euros, but I liked the box itself, the fact that there's a manual and everything, so it'd be kinda nice to have, like a souvenir.
Some of the screenies on the box were very different from what I remember seeing in the game, as well some inventory items . So basically, how much do the original and GOTY differ, apart from patches and such?

As I understand it, the main difference between the original version and the GOTY version is the inclusion of multiplayer.
I have also heard that the GOTY version cleaned up some performance issues which supposedly made even decent machines chug and occasionally dump to desktop, but I ran it perfectly fine on a 333MHz with 64M RAM and it never chugged nor dumped on me once.

Easy question. Deus Ex is a must-have game. Just like Thief 1&2 + System Shock 1&2.

No no, you guys misunderstood. Or I wasn't clear enough (probably that). I already have DX, Game of the Year version. Have in fact played it 5-6 times already. But now I found the very first version, in a cardboard box with printed manuals and all. And I'm just wondering would it be a good purchase, in some other way than to see what it was like when it came out the first time. Like, are there any big differences between the original release and the GOTY version etc. Gingerbread Man already pretty much answered that part but I'd like to hear if there're some things that really are different between the versions. As I said, there were some different things in the screenies on the box art, which made me wonder just how different they're.
Oh buggerit: who am I kidding? I'm gonna buy it anyway, just for 'sentimental' value if nothing else, so I check it out then:thumb:

Last two posters not reading the original post... anyhow, no it's not worth your money to get the original version when you already have the GOTY, unless you LIKE downloading patches rather than having a pre-patched version. That's basically the only difference at all between the two of them, so if you want the box and manual, get it, otherwise save your money.
Btw: There actually was a boxed with manual release of the GOTY edition too, which is what I have :)

Copy that:thumb:
Yeah this version in discussion is the real thing- the first edition. But since there're really are no major differences , I'll think I pass anyhow. Man, I really am a guy with solid decisons:p
Boxed GOTYs? All we get here are those cheap looking plastic covers. Oh well, can't have it all.
Cheers, mate!

If it's an original, unopened copy, you won't just get a manual with it, you'll also get a full-sized newspaper facsimile that brings you up to speed on the current status of the game world, such as what Bob Page is up to and such. If you're a collector, it'll be worth it just for that. I can't tell you exactly what's on it, unfortunately, seeing as I lost mine years ago (I swear it was the maid!), but it might be something to look into. Is there anything else that comes with the original?

Yeah, I forgot about that paper. Here, lemmie take some pics for you to show not only what you'd get in the box, but also what the GOTY boxed version looks like. I've also seen the GOTY jewel-only copies around too, but I got my copy two years ago.
Here's the pics (640 X 480 per forum regs)

I omitted the CD case, I'm sure you guys know what that's all about

Decisions, decisions.
The newspaper fascimile is also on tne GOTY CD in a pdf-format, but obviously the printed version is just way much cooler! The whole package, whether the original or then boxed GOTY, are very nice things already on their own+ the actual game itself, of course.
One thing I'd like to see in games would be an extra cd with art work, trailers, maybe interviews and such, like in DVDs. I've no idea how much more expensive that would make the games, but I don't think it would be much. It'd be material accumulated during the development process , therefore nothing new and expensive. Gold or GOTY versions would probably be the best versions to include this stuff, since that would mean the game has found it's established fan base and the extra material would be a nice gesture and 'Thank you' from the devs.
