 Right, I forgot we were being deliberately obtuse here.
Put it this way, if it was a choice between only having paedophilia in the world and only having religion I know what I'd choose. Try thinking about the degrees of psychological damage, not just the numbers.
Dr. Dumb_lunatic on 31/5/2006 at 20:00
Jesus....have you any idea of the NUMBERS, though?
In terms of "potential fucknuts ready to run rampage", religion has the ball WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY in excess of paedophilia.
That said, I'm assuming from the tone of your post you'd keep religion. If you'd keep paedophilia, then yay you. Otherwise, WTF?
Crusades >> child abuse.

Well, such a vision is of course contingent on the world being inhabitable in 100 years time, which I certainly wouldn't take for granted.
As anyone who has been following the 'Ocean Odyssey' programmes on BBC1 will know. Personally, I can't see the human race lasting 50 years.
P.S. Yes I have looged straigt on to ttlg after watching ocean odyssey, my divination of the future is only outmatched by my complete lack of a social life. (and my total lack of guilt...:ebil: )

So religion has
only had a very negative influence on humanity?

In light of recent events, I'm creating a lobby group with the specific intention of getting "paedophiles" changed to "thread".
Sorry noid, it started out with bright potential :(

Many people have been giving spiritual and moral strength from their respective religions. Unfortunately, there are those who are either mentally unstable, (Fucknuts,) and those who wish to use people's beliefs to gain power, (Twats,) both groups do not represent the majority, but do represent a problem. Er. Well thank you very much, I'm all confused now  ...

If only to get rid of the whole thousand years of darkness and ignorance in the Middle Ages thing*, yeah, frankly, I'd pick religion.
*At least in Europe
Naitachal on 31/5/2006 at 21:30
WingedKagouti, people who prey on others and people who are unstable will be able to do so regardless of vehicle; religion has just proven to be a rather widespread tool for douchebaggery. And while there is bad in religion, there is also a lot of good. In the end, religion is people--some good, some bad.

Hey guys, I think my browser is messed up.
When I view the forums, I don't see the 'shit on this thread' button.
Is it in my user CP?

Hard to tell as there is such hysteria everytime the idea is mentioned. I seem to remember reading that there was some evidence that the 'befriending' idea worked in Canada.
Never heard of it. Got a link?

There is also the rather radical idea of offering more help to victims- help that is easily available & cheap, or preferably free. If a proportion of abusers were abused themselves it could help, as well as the other obvious benefits to those who are just going to take it out on themselves rather than others.
Well, everyone knows that women don't commit crimes, so we can pretty much traumatize them as much as we want!
Regarding religion, I think most of the awful behavior that occurs with religion as an excuse would still happen in the absence of religion. Rousseau might think we're naturally good until some evil belief corrupts us, but I'm inclined to think we're naturally prone to stupidity and shitty behavior. I also think people aren't all that malleable and that much of who we are becomes fixed rather early. Given different immediate circumstances people will of course behave differently, just as I wouldn't be typing if there wasn't a keyboard in front of me, but I don't hold out much hope for reshaping a person's pattern of behavior. Pedophilia seems like a rather deep-seated aspect of a person, with apparently higher than average recidivism rates. Chemically suppressing the behavior and not giving pedophiles the opportunity to do it again seems like the best solution to me.
