Orbweaver I think there is a big difference between pedophiles watching child abuse pictures and people seeing war on the news. I think that the motivation behind it is the key - people watching war on tv don't like it but pedophiles watching child abuse do like it.

True, but exaggerating/extrapolating for effect seems to be the norm around here.

Still, the fact remains that there is a world of difference between directly committing a crime, assisting in a crime, and merely witnessing a crime.

For a start, a paedophile who watches kiddie porn can do so over and over again. Ok, so maybe the kids in the porn are being abused, and it's wrong, wrong wrong, but if a guy watches that instead of going out and repeatedly doing it himself, it's far less harmful to society as a whole. Thus it should carry a lighter sentence.

H'mmm, speaking of dumb pedophiles, this reminds me of a program that was so popular in America they did it a few different times (one of those 60 minutes/Dateline type shows... I forget which one). Basically, there was this group who went on chat rooms and pretended to be children who lured potential pedophiles to this house, where, upon entering it, the pedophile was accosted by the reporter there. I'm not sure if the pedophiles were arrested or just shamed on air... either way, it seemed kind of exploitive, but some of these guys were so dumb to fall for this, maybe they deserved it.

Actually, there was this one guy who went to the house and got chewed out by the reporter. The next day they tricked the same guy into going to McDonalds to meet up with a child for sex. When the reporter, hanging around outside McDonalds, bumps into the pedophile again, the reporter can't believe it. I don't know... either this was the dumbest, most desperate pedophile of all time, or the guy had mental problems (probably the latter... I doubt someone would fall for the same trick twice, two days in a row).

While pedophilia is a serious issue, it sure can make some people crazy and utterly irrational, almost to the point of dark comedy (anyone remember the McMartin preschool scandal from the 80's?)
