Do you believe that any of the “events” that happen in dues ex could ever happen in real life?
Do you believe that we will ever have any of the weapons or technologies that the game has?

As far as technology is concerned I think we're dreaming, but the events... well, I don't think they're unrealistic after all... Then again, I'm usually rather pessimistic, so it may be just me. Let's say it wouldn't surprise me much. (I'd prefer to see that nothing happens though, of course :p)
And for the Builder's sake, it's "DEUS EX", not "DUES EX"!!!:o

I think the technology can become a reality. Already there are machines that can make nanotechnology, it's simple but it's there.
As for the story well..

Actually I had the sword in mind... nano-augs *are* indeed realistic... provided we wait some more decades... Gah! I want'em now!

and Chocolicious Soylent.
a situation such as Unatco and FEMA seems like it reaslly could happen, but it all goes into fantasy after the Illuminati is mentioned..

I heard that the Illuminati does in fact, really exist. They are not hell bent on taking over the world though. Form what I understand about them is that when it was originally formed in may have had those intentions, but now it is just a prestige club to belong to.
Then again this is just what I have heard.

I think, that like all true science-fiction (as opposed to future-based fantasies like star wars), Deus Ex is a form of social inquiry, and has multiple and multi-faceted themes.
Good science-fiction writers not only show a frightening depiction of what our current lifestyle could lead to, but they also provide a subtle depiction of the nature of the present. Deus ex has all the hallmarks of this form of science fiction: when you talk to many of the key characters, they often bring up things that happenned "more than 50 years ago", or they mention present day people and organisations as history, therefore the creators can be seen to be expressing their opinions of these people or organisations.
some general ideas -
-national governments are impotent in the face of the rich and powerful.
-elected figureheads are both bribed and blackmailed (with ambrosia).
-purpose of the UN was to begin building a one-world government.
-Revolutionaries are villified.
-Conspirators among the wealthy influence world events for their own benefit.
As for the Illuminati, well, the creators of Deus-Ex didn't think up that group, they have been a conspiracy theory for decades. I doubt that there is still a group of people that call themselves "the Illuminati" and meet in old Templar Cathedrals. However it wouldn't surprise me if there are people who dont call themselves anything, but influence the world in the same way as the creators of Dues-Ex describe; the word "Illuminati" has probably been used by conspiracy theorists simply to give it a name.
