One of the big kickers here is that choice to play as a male or female character. "Our approach to having a female player character we think is kind of progressive. We're not putting her in the game because just because she's a babe. There's a higher percentage of women that play Deus Ex compared to most shooters," says Harvey. "We want to facilitate both sides and all different play styles and so you know we take the female player character very seriously. But of course we also have the male character and we have the same ethnic choices, hair color choices, things like that... And it's so cool because we do in-engine cutscenes so whatever choices you make, you'll see in the game." As to whether the choice of gender for the main character would affect storyline or gameplay at all, the answer is not really. They didn't want to change the game totally for that reason, but there will be some NPCs that treat a female character a midge different than they would a male one in terms of the way they speak and interact. But the main plot points and decisions will remain the same.
Cool!

Yes, well, this was supposed to happen in the first DX too, so don't hold your breath...

Also, that's not exactly new... But I didn't know they had explained why, though =)

System shocker, you win again. :D

Okay, now we know his/her name is Alex Denton, but why? Just because Alex is a name for both gender? The name JC and Paul have their philosophical and theological meanings, which also match the title, "Deus Ex". What about Alex? Alexander the Great?!
I know there are maps in Egypt in DX2.... What a distant relationship. :p
Speaking of different dialogue and NPC behavior but same storyline for female charactor: This has been done in UW, more than 10 years ago.

Hidden raises his hand
Could it perhaps be because in DX1 there was that tank in Area51 that had the name tag "Alex Denton", as a teaser of sorts for possible sequels? Really, I thought this was just assumed (though it will be a hell of a job explaining how s/he survived the big explosion).
Optical_Alth on 23/2/2003 at 12:01
I remember that tank as well. When I was discussing DX2 with some friends (ages back when we first heard about it), I mentioned that.
