Everything great and prosperous about America could be argued to have been built on the misery and exploitation of other countries though, so this is Capitalism coming home to roost.
Everything?
I thought it was our form of government that made America great, and which lead a lot of people to come here? And a free market system. When we had a free market system of course.
Also a lot of things were already here, good farmland, minerals waterways we had no need to take it from others.
It is funny how we threw off the shackles of British colonialism but didn't help[ the common men and women of South America throw of the power structures left over by european colonialism.Missed opportunity there.
And after reading,Secrets of an Economic Hitman, I can see that American Corporations along with help from our govt have exploited and economically raped other countries which most Americans choose to be ignorant of much to their detriment. It is a complete betrayl of American ideals as I understand them.
Labeling leaders communists when those leaders want to help their people(Iran) from British exploitation etc.Calling in the CIA to interfere with Iranian politics.
Corporations do not want competition or a free market system and do not want a self reliant third world. They want them sucking at the tit of the World Bank and making themselves more profitable. It is control versus freedom and the creativity it could bring to help the third world prosper and more importantly to be self reliant economically.

Free men are aware of the imperfection inherent in human affairs, and they are willing to fight and die for that which is not perfect. They know that basic human problems can have no final solutions, that our freedom, justice, equality, etc. are far from absolute, and that the good life is compounded of half measures, compromises, lesser evils, and gropings toward the perfect. The rejection of approximations and the insistence on absolutes are the manifestation of a nihilism that loathes freedom, tolerance, and equity.

Last seen aquiring Manhattan Island? That week in '29 just before that other thing? When was this mythical time? Didn't some guys from Georgia claim to have the free market frozen in a chest freezer a couple of weeks back?

Yeah, but it was actually just a planned economy with a rubber mask on.

Should be required reading for money managers - (
http://www.amazon.com/Short-History-Financial-Euphoria-Whittle/dp/0140238565) A Short History of Financial Euphoria
Actually JKG should be required reading - period.
Synopsis - every generation thinks they have discovered some way to make an end run around financial reality - and gets it's ass kicked. People get hurt, the perps get away, everyone swears never to be stupid again... and then the next tulip mania or sub-prime scam comes along and we rediscover greed...
If you have any money, there should be some real stock bargains available over the next few weeks. Start shopping.
