Dual-core system doesn't like DX1... - by descenterace

Is there a technical FAQ for getting DX1 running on WinXP, Dual-core CPUs, etc? I couldn't find one.
Installed the game for the first time in two years, patched it to v1112, then discovered it acts really weirdly regardless of which rendering device I choose.
At the menu, the background animation runs normally unless I move the mouse, whereupon it speeds up by a factor of two or three until I stop moving the mouse.
Athlon X2
GF 7800GTX
1GB RAM
Dual-monitor config with Ultramon
WinXP Pro
Also, is it normal for OpenGL to display odd artifacts during the menu animation, eg. translucent boxes at the corners of the polygons used for animating the background?

While I remember... any particular reason why the game won't let me choose 1280x1024? It allows 1280x800, which my monitor doesn't even support as far as I know, but nothing higher (not even 1280x960).

I am sure it'll come as a surprise to no one that I am a complete idiot.
Turned off my second monitor in Ultramon and it works fine...

Not having a dual-core system, I couldn't speak from experience, but this is what I understand:
The Unreal engine is single-threaded, the upshot of which is that it will run solely on one core leaving the other to idle. I don't imagine how this would affect DX but some people have reported similar problems. There should be a command-line parameter for selecting the CPU speed (I suggest setting it to the speed of an individual core rather than the pair), or the CPUSPEED=<speed in MHz> command listed on (
http://unreal.epicgames.com/UTConsole.htm).

Or, y'know, he could turn off his second monitor in Ultramon ... ;)

Matthew, do you even know what "dual core" means?

Try reading the thief FAQs about running in dual core. It will take you to Salvages webpage, download imagecfg.
Ive had problems with Painkiller and XIII running in dual. I used the thief gold bat to fix both of them. Just replace thief.exe with deusex.exe (whatever its called) and run it in the same folder as the exe. Back the exe file up first

Indeed I do. I was referring to the edit in descenterace's post thus:

Well I guess there is something to be said for reading people's posts after all. :p

Though, having said that, I may have picked him up wrongly and it could just be the resolution question that was fixed by that.
descenterace on 6/12/2005 at 12:18
Turning off the second monitor solved all the problems. I guess it selects resolutions by aspect ratio (and two monitors act as one logical 'screen' in Windows). No idea why that solved the mouse problem though.
There are still a few speed problems. My movement speed seems to fluctuate slightly but I can't figure out the common denominator for that.
Just reached the Cathedral. I'd forgotten how much I love this game...

Dual core made Painkiller run fast/normal/fast all in the same stage. It was wierd. My earlier post fixed that problem too. One processor seems to fix that as well. Speaking of which I cant belive the whole game never lags due to using only 1GHzof 2 1GHz processors since the box states a minimum of 1.5GHz?? This system is definitalty faster than my old 2.6Ghz which I cant understand either. I timed both of them in several places.
