but the moment it's about "the plot" it gets sooooooooo old with a long grey beard....the moment the camera switches from a brilliant line of shale/alistair to the generic MMO backgrounds I'm back in the 16bit-dungeon-generator valley. the - for me - extremely uninspired maps and repetetive enemies do the rest.
I actually don't really disagree with any of the above, although for the most part I think it all worked, or at least the strengths outshone the weaknesses. As for the plot, I agree it's extremely generic and derivative, but--
here's the thing--also really well executed.

well, seems I'm still too early in the plot for
"andraste", I'm level 11 and have 32% completed. thanks for the tips. I think I have alistair almost at shield expertise, I will invest in it next time. and healer, well, I only have wynne and I don't like the old hag so I fear she will be too low-level once I return (or do all party members scale with you, even when they are not in a fight ?).
Yeah the ones at camp level up as you do.
Stitch on 7/1/2010 at 19:26
My party through most of the game was two tanks (myself and Alistair) and two mages, one specializing in offense (Morrigan) and one in healing (Wynne). I generally found this combo to be pretty effective for keeping most battles under control.
I've got Leliana in there instead of Alistair right now, though, and I've got to say a fully upgraded archer can fuck some shit up.

My party was dog, myself (rogue/bard/duelist), leilana (ranger), and morrigan (arcane warrior) and I didn't have too many issues fucking shit up. Between dog, 2 bards, and Morrigan firing off paralysis and cold spells there isn't much in the game that even gets a turn in combat.

On my second character I managed to pull that bit off around level 12-13, I think, that was two days ago, but I am playing on Easy so YMMV. As for Wynne, I hate her guts too, in fact on my first character she had the decency to fuck off already (
many hours after I finished the Urn quest I came back and poured the dragon blood in and she took exception :D), but I really think you need a dedicated healer for this battle with, at least, Heal, Regeneration, and Group Heal. If you're patient enough I guess you could spec Morrigan that way and give her the Spirit Healer specialisation.
Also, a tip regarding what to do with the drake scales you got along the Urn quest, and
the dragon scale from Andraste, if you get it, I'd suggest that when you place your first order with Wade, the smith in Denerim, you tell him to do it "quick and well" for the extra 10 gold. The catch here is that after that he will be able to make the "Superior" variety of any armour without you having to pay extra again. If you want to get the most out of your scales, I'd suggest reading (
http://dragonage.wikia.com/wiki/Wade#Optimum_Order) these notes on the DA wiki (nevermind the exploit), they're very short and to the point.

Well there it is, 64 hours and the archdemon lies dead.
That was one hell of a game.
mothra on 8/1/2010 at 04:09
lol, i have 50hours with my mage and have 30% played. or does it add up all my characters playtime, that would be more likely. and I play on "normal". which is pretty hard since I almost never use healing, salves or those other stuff....crystals. I'm just too lazy it seems. but I do direct everbody my self since they always do some fucked up shit like run into the blizzard or attack the guy on the other side of the map instead of the one poking their back :)
Stitch on 8/1/2010 at 05:00
Yeah, the best way to handle fighters and blizzards is to have them switch to a ranged weapon (or, alternately, press H to disable AI-inspired movement). I generally micromanaged the shit out of all party members.
As for the total amount of Dragon Age completed, in the end I managed a mere 40%, although I had apparently explored 90% of the world. I really have no idea where that other 60% is lurking, as I did most of the side quests I ran into.

What Dragon Age does well is get you really attached to your character and -to a lesser extend- your party members. It's largely unpolished in many respects, but if that emotional attachment works for you, you have little reason not to enjoy it.
At least that's how it was for me. And I'm not even an RPG fan; I've played few, I've liked even less.

micro ftw !!! I disabled all tactics slots yesterday and switched to H for the full duration of the fight and I WADED through the darkspawn in
Orzammar/Paragon of Her Kind. Unbelievable that an Ogre was like the most dangerous foe during the origin and now I shatter Ogre Alphas without breaking a sweat. (well, I still have to be careful and use the old bait enemy + retreat tactic which works wonders with blizzard/firestorm. most enemies arrive in a poor state at my GATES OF TANK - Alistair + Shale).
letting the enemy swarm you is still the end but do the old chokepoint trick and I never even used 1 health potion.
oh, so my 30% isn't that bad. at what level did you end it and what is the official cap ?
did you really do most of the sidemissions ?
I mean, there are: at least 6/chantryboard 6/blackstone regulars 6/mages and another few for smaller faction PER LOCATION. I usually do only 1 of them for the loot or drops.
