He also does backflips.

Eh. Well Malf, I'm not too surprised you didn't enjoy the combat portion, especially with that party. Wynne is heavily specced as a healer, and even if you dropped everything into crowd control after you got her, mana management would've been a pain. If you're not playing a mage, Morrigan should probably be attached to your hip - mages are too important for group disabling and damage. The game simply is heavily tilted towards hoards, and honestly, towards mages.
Same with the leved world. Fighters get stronger, gain a few extra abilities here and there, but their bread and butter never changes. Mages on the other hand are almost always more limited by spell cooldowns, so levels mean more - more spells, less waiting.

Oh christ, please tell me there's another combat mage beside Morrigan. I'm playing as a thief (Though I've stopped because the game's so badly balanced that even the most minor of fights ends with most of my party dead) and I can't wait to ditch her because she constantly bitches at me.

There isn't. I suppose you could invest heavily into combat spells with Wynne, and get her at least fairly decent, though you'd almost certainly have to do the circle before anything else to get her before she spends too many skill points.
You'll have to go without Wynne healing that way though - she chews through mana far too fast when healing to be of any use offensively if she's also the healer.

Not true. I gave her Cone of Cold and she was way more useful. Freeze a group of enemies and then use her boulder spell to shatter one. I wasn't even using any health or mana potions in most fights after that.
Most of the people who think this game is too hard, myself included the first time I played, aren't using crowd control spells like sleep, cone, or mass paralyze. They're way more useful than pure damage spells. And later in the game when your fighters and rogues get skills that hit groups of enemies it's even easier.
Here's some more tips that might help you, driver:
* Never use auto-level. It's terrible.
* Invest in spell combos. Cone/Stonefist, Cone/Crushing Prison, Sleep/Nightmare are good choices.
* At least get Heal for all mages.
* Don't forget about Alisair's Cleanse spell if you're having trouble with mages.
* Stamina be damned, put the best armor on your tank and get Taunt ASAP.
* Don't rely on tactics presets to win. I mostly keep mine completely disabled.
* Never use or put points into shape shifting. It's just not good in any way.

I use the same tactic - I have Morrigan with all the Cold spells, so she uses Cone of Cold to hold a group of enemies, then Wynne's Stonefist or Alistair's Overpower can usually be used to shatter a couple of them before they unfreeze.
Also, getting Morrigan to use a hex, then Drain Life is a useful trick.

PC is clearly sharper (even though I bet they did not turn on the hidden ansio settings in the ini) but ugly looking/designed game stays ugly no matter how sharp the engine.

Ok, RELATIVELY the same.

Except they don't.
Anyway, I'm loving this game but finding it to be extremely difficult, which is so far a good thing. I'm at the final battle at Soldier's Peak and have twice not even managed to survive past the penultimate demon wave. I think I need to utilize Morrigan better, but she's only leveled up once under my care and her spell selection so far could be better. I'm in dire need of a good area of effect or two.
This will be one of those fights where I dig deep in my inventory.
